" The elegant Auntie of
Tokyo, cashes in 'her'
club and opens a
retirement home on
the sea for gay
gentlemen . . and that
is just the beginning
of the story . .
"

In the film, Min Tanaka plays Himiko, a terminally ill gay man, and the founder of the titular gay seniors home Maison de Himiko. According to producer Osamu Kubota - quoted here - "the inspiration for the film's story came from his having read an Asahi newspaper article on the Home for Golden Gays, a gay seniors home founded in Manila by Justo C. Justo."

Maison de Himiko takes a highly novel point-of-view on the issue of a burgeoning aging Japanese population by centering its story around a retirement home for elderly gay gentlemen. Directed by Isshin Inudo (Josee, the Tiger and the Fish), who is one of those quality directors deeply respected in Japan but all but unknown in these parts, it manages the increasingly rare feat of being a mainstream tragicomedy that refuses to resort to quick and easy sentimentality. Saori (Shibasaki) is a young woman who seems to have given up on self-esteem. She is permanently short of cash, screws around with the boss at her part-time job, and spends her lunch breaks leafing through recruitment ads for phone sex workers. One day, handsome Haruhiko (Odagiri) shows up at her workplace, with a peculiar job offer: to come work part time as a maid at the retirement home where her estranged father (Tanaka) is spending his final days. The old man is dying and mostly bedridden. The pay offered is exceptionally good for a part-time position but the prospect puts her off; Saori has never forgiven her father for running out on her mother. That he has been openly gay, going under the name of Himiko while running one of the most popular gay establishments of his time and the fact that this dashing young man of her own age is her father's lover only adds insult to injury.

The themes of Maison de Himiko run, as themes tend to do, deeper than the subject of homosexuality alone. The titular retirement home is in many ways an enclave, a safe haven within society at large, where people are allowed to be themselves without fear of judgment or exclusion. Here, the need for tatemae, the public face, has disappeared. Despite her resistance, Saori is to all intents and purposes right at home there, since she too refuses to hide her disillusionment and anger from the real world. Her obstinate behavior and her refusal to look cute and act proper set her apart from her colleagues at her day job. But where she allows her grudges to isolate her, the inhabitants of the maison refuse to be hemmed in. The film derives much of its power from this investigation into human facades and their purpose. Saori hates her father for abandoning her mother, but fails to take his feelings into account. However, she comes to realize that the bond between her parents was more complex and tighter than she thought, even after their separation, and that it showed an ability to accept and forgive that she never even imagined possible.

Concurrently, Maison de Himiko also views its characters and their choices in life with acceptance and tolerance. It is not free of gay stereotypes, with two of the most enduring putting in appearances, that of the screaming queens and the romanticized pretty boys that are so dear to shojo manga readers. Most of the peripheral characters adhere squarely to the former sort, while Odagiri's is an exponent of the latter tradition. The film nevertheless manages to overcome such stereotyping because it cares for the people it depicts. The screenplay gives minor personages a trait or a back story that allows these men to gain an extra, usually tragic, dimension. A solid effort was made to present more than a cardboard cut-out. The actors latch on to these vestiges of humanity, while at the same time relishing the opportunity to run around in pastel frocks. The result, it must be said, is quite infectious.

On the other end of the scale, this motley bunch is balanced out nicely by a pair of grave, dignified performances courtesy of Joe Odagiri and Min Tanaka, who lend an unerringly dark heart to what could otherwise easily have turned into farce. In a role that most young actors with a following of teenage girls would turn down flat, Odagiri transforms his character into another of those enigmatic, troubled souls that are quickly becoming the ubiquitous young thespian's trademark. Tanaka meanwhile, is perhaps the most impressive presence in the film, even though he does little but sit at the sidelines of most scenes and observe. A dancer in real life, Tanaka cuts an imposing figure, giving Himiko a thoroughly unexpected air of unmistakably masculine cool, despite being dressed pretty much exclusively in silken night gowns and a head wrap ala Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard.

A thoroughly de-glamorized Kou Shibasaki, finally, falls neatly in between these two extremes. For much of the film, she slouches around with a scowl, making no effort to hide her disdain and disgust for this community of queers, but at the same time she gets along with them phenomenally when it comes to boogying down on the dance floor or mimicking characters from TV Anime.

Maison de Himiko dances into camp with some over the top dance routines. A subplot follows the plot twist of the coming out process of a harassing underage neighborhood bully who spearheaded the anti-gay graffiti painted across the front wall of the Maison. Himiko's house is a pleasant place to while away an hour or two, no matter what your personal inclination may be. ~

"You never know where loves going to grow...it's a "Trick of Fate."

The term "coming-of-age" in reference to films about kids in their mid to late teens has become a cliché, but one cannot deny these films' have the instant ability for most to relate to because all of us at one point have experienced the painful transition from adolescence to adulthood, with the realization that finally getting to be grown up isn't the experience we dreamed it would be.

'Summer Storm' is a painfully realistic, yet positive story of a small town athlete’s first awkward sexual awakening. It follows the angst of Tobi, who realizes that his feelings toward his closest friend, Achim, have gone past friendship and into a mixture of sexual desire and love. Achim is marginally aware of Tobi's feelings, although he does not quite understand what is going on. Achim is experiencing his own first love – with a girl – and the resulting strain on his and Tobi's friendship takes a toll as they head off to a summer camp to focus on rigorous athletic training for an upcoming rowing event.

It is at the camp that the team encounters another team called the Queerstrokes which is made up of gay men, all of them comfortable with their sexuality and very open about it. This team is ridiculed by some of Tobi’s teammates, but Tobi himself seems both fascinated and repulsed by the Queerstrokes. In creating friendships with some of the men, Tobi finds a means of acceptance, both external and internal, of his perplexing dilemma. This new found comfort does nothing, however, to alleviate the tensions between him and Achim.

He has already felt an intense desire to be more intimate with Achim, and an equally intense jealousy of Achim’s new girlfriend Sandra. Tobi tries to pair up with Sandra’s beautiful teammate Anke, but the sparks don’t fly as they should and he is left to stew in his own jealousy and frustrated sexual desire compounded by the homophobic comments of a wealthy teammate.

The acting in Summer Storm is so good that viewers might forget that they are watching a work of fiction. Each character is so perfectly cast, so well-rounded, that they could easily be real people. The acting never feels forced, as it is so natural and fresh and honest.

Written and directed by Marco Kreuzpainter, 'Summer Storm' perfectly captures the pain experienced when the object of your first sexual crush thinks of you as “just a friend.” When Tobi’s awkward advances toward Achim are made public knowledge he finds refuge with one sensitive member of the rival team. This young man tells him that being gay will never be easy, but hiding who you are is even worse. No matter what ones sexual orientation, we can all relate to the sheer pain and indignity of unrequited love as well as the confusion and excitement that often accompany young adulthood.

All Tobi’s dreams for his summer vacation might not have worked out as perfectly as they would have in a John Hughes’ flick, but while watching you get the distinct impression that he’s going to be just fine anyway. 'Summer Storm' may seem to be simplistically hopeful, but its sweet and truthful portrayal of the pain associated with discovering your identity will be appreciated by anyone who has gone through a like experience.

Filmed on location in Germany, the cinematography, especially since the majority of the film takes place outside, is downright gorgeous. The picture is crisp and clear, and the colors are beautiful. The stunning visuals do much to contribute to the overall emotional impact of the film.

"A Tale of Deceit, Power, and Victimization: Fassbinder at his Best!"

A powerful and harrowing melodrama and one of Fassbinder's most accessible movies, this is a must-see for all those interested in intelligent film making.

The tragic story of Fox is masterfully and poignantly handled by Fassbinder, while never slipping into sloppy sentimentality. At the same time the film explores sexual and political issues that are still very much relevant.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder has long been honored as the 'bad boy' in European cinema, a writer, director and actor who repeatedly has taken chances and because of his brutal honesty has succeeded in making a stream of important films.

'Fox and His Friends' dates back to 1975 and remains one of Fassbinder's most successful films. As with all of his films, Fassbinder deals with the homosexual subculture in Germany but his main message goes far beyond the characters he creates: the examination of how people manipulate people for personal gain and the destruction that produces is a recurring problem and one that this film certainly explores.

'Fox' - a nickname of Franz Bieberkopf - (acted with consummate skill by Fassbinder himself) is a lower class gay carny kid whose lover is arrested, leaving the carnival to collapse and leaving Fox without support. Enter handsome Max (Karlheinz Böhm), a wealthy antiques dealer, who picks up Fox, helps him buy the requisite 'lottery ticket' on which Fox bases his hopes for financial survival via manipulative means, and takes him home, introducing Fox to his gay friends who regard Fox as scum but show obvious physical attraction to his rawness.

Surprisingly Fox wins the lottery and suddenly has 500,000 DMs and with his new money, Max's friends abruptly see a target for obtaining that money. One of the friends named Eugen (Peter Chatel) takes Fox in as a lover and talks him into investing in Eugen's family business of bookbinding. Eugen's father Wolf (Adrian Hoven) and mother (Ulla Jacobsson) tolerate their son's life with a low class wretch, ridiculing his manners and lack of culture and education, but willingly take his money to salvage their business.

With a lover and a business and a role model to make him suave, Fox dons fancy clothes, banters with his old friends in a tawdry club, and makes the pretenses that at last he is secure and happy. But in time Fox is blamed for problems at the business and when his funds have been depleted on expensive vacations and apartments by the smarmy self centered Eugen, Fox realizes that now without money he has no 'fancy friends', no lover, no security and his life becomes unbearable: the ending to the film is a tragedy beyond description.

Some would say the film is mannered in ways that depict stereotypes of the gay world (effeminate men, transvestite
s, hustlers, etc), but Fassbinder is completely honest in his attempt to recreate a subculture of a specific time in Germany.

The characters are well written and well acted allowing us to look at Fassbinder's greater picture of depravity between social class antipathies.

In many ways this is a difficult film to watch, but Fassbinder wisely places the main character whom he enacts in a place where his foibles and lack of higher class knowledge can be at once very humorous as well as pitiable. 'Fox and His Friends' has become a classic in gay cinema repertoire. ~ Grady Harp

"Two boys refreshingly not riven by angst fumble their way through
testosterone and sexual awakening to
a happy self acceptance and friendship"

When Nico's parents go on a summer trip, he stays at their beach front house alone with his childhood friend Dani, a lanky, cocky fellow. The two enjoy their liberty, meet some girls, go swimming, and talk about sex during their nightly krampac (joint masturbation) sessions. Krampac is a word coined by the playwright Jordi Sanchez in his original play of the same name and hence the title of the movie. Their friendship starts showing some wear and tear when it becomes clear that the object of Dani's burgeoning sexual longings are the girls, while Nico is mostly interested in Dani.

Against ocean sunsets and the Spanish landscape, we watch these adolescents come to grips with what they want, and what they can get. They buy condoms, they smoke some dope, they go to beach parties, they even try to drug an unsuspecting girl with sleeping pills. All of this is served up with the right mixture of knowing and nostalgia. It just might remind you of long-forgotten make-out sessions on some parents' couch in a not uncomfortable way. Based on a play by Jordi Sanchez, director Cesc Gay manages exactly the right tone.

The movie's success is especially amazing in the light of how much could have gone wrong. Coming-of-age-in-the-summer movies tend to produce a prefabricated aftertaste. The gay subject matter as well as the straight sex could have been exploited, over dramatized, or screwed up in a million other ways. Ink has been spilled over the film being "uncompromising" and "disturbing," but there is a difference between frankness and exploitation. The honesty here is reassuring and touching rather than off-putting. "Krámpack" gets the balance exactly right. The film is light, but not slight, a little miracle of handling a delicate topic with great deftness and care.

Fernando Ramallo, who plays Nico, is a hot commodity in Spain, and it's easy to see why: he oozes a peculiar kind of confidence and independence that makes it hard to take your eyes off him. Jordi Vilches' Dani, a hyper kinetic joker who's just figuring out what to do with all that testosterone, is the perfect foil for him. In fact, all the characters are a delight, and maybe that's part of the movie's secret: there are no villains in it, nobody is to blame for the things that go wrong, and everybody deserves our attention. It's rare that something so generous and smart flickers over the screens.

"A Beautiful and Intense Perspective on Human Sexuality and the Spectrum of Love"

Sébastien Lifshitz ('Come Undone', 'The Crossing') is one of the more sensitive directors to arrive on the scene in some time. He molds stories about the periphery of mankind and creates deeply human dramas without the clutter and noise that often dampen the effect of intense emotional experiences. He is intelligent, a fine writer and observer and a man unafraid to take chances: all but two of the actors in WILD SIDE are amateurs with no experience in front of the camera and from these neophytes he extracts brilliant performances. He is an artist to watch.

Stéphanie (Stéphanie
Michelini) is a transsexual who makes her living through prostitution on the streets of Paris. She is a gentle, soft-spoken, tender person who is making her way in life as the being she has selected to present. She meets Djamel (Yasmine Belmadi) a handsome bisexual North African young man who likewise makes his living turning tricks in the subways and streets of Paris, another person estranged from his family as is Stéphanie. Yet another young man Mikhail (Edouard Nikitine) estranged from his family in Russia meets Stéphanie and falls in love with her. The three outsiders from a true ménage a trois, all three genetically males, all three in need of love and belonging and capable of sharing love equally within the trio. When Stéphanie learns her estranged mother (Josiane Stoléru) is critically ill, she travels to her rural French neighborhood of her youth together with Mikhail and Djamel and it is this confrontation with her past and the way she pieces her life together with the love of Mikhail and Djamel that creates the beauty of this film.

Though ther
e are innumerable reasons for recommending this film the main one remains the manner in which Lifshitz has taken a script written with his long-term associate and fellow professor at La Fémis (Paris) Stéphane Bouquet about a marginalized portion of society and crafted one of the more touching love stories that needs and receives no apologies. Stéphanie (the actress is a transsexual in real life and has never acted before) is presented not as an oddity but as just a human being for whom life has dealt some challenges. We see her in the opening scenes fully nude with the lovely body of a female that happens to also have male genitalia. The isolation of Stéphanie's life is shown from the beginning in a scene where a group of transsexuals listen tearfully as a singer (Antony Hegarty) sings a tender ballad 'I fell in love with a beautiful dead boy...but was he a girl or a boy?'. This quiet manner pervades the film.

Mikhail is likewise played by an unknown inexperience
d actor and plumbs the depths of his lonely Russian émigré with gently nuanced humility. Djamel and Stephanie's mother are played by actors with whom Lifshitz has worked before and their superlative work helps coax the best performances from the neophytes. The breathtaking cinematography is by Agnès Godard, a genius for creating atmosphere and mood, equally successful in the cramped environs where the sex for money acts are performed as well as in the beauty of the Parisian streets and the French rural countryside. The subtle music score by Jocelyn Pook is variations by a string quartet and harp and very well composed. The DVD gratefully includes and interview with Lifshitz and for once the information shared is extremely beneficial to the enjoyment of the film.

Because audiences in general have difficulty with trans/homosexual love scenes this film will probably never receive the recognition it deserves. But for those who long for the power of truly fine independent films, this film is as fine as they come - in story, in direction, in acting, in cinematography and, most important, in honesty. It is a jewel of a movie. Highly Recommended. ~ Grady Harp

With a hint of 'Film Noir' a surprising exploration of the evolution of the homosexuality of two adolescent boys . ..

I
n 1980 Jacques Duron produced this short (44 minutes) black and white film and presented French cinema a recording of the dynamics of two young boys coming of age as homosexuals.

Duron captured the metamorphosis of Philippe and Claude into sexual 'adulthood' from the cocoon of their boyhood friendship.

Philippe's recognition of his homosexuality and the blossoming of his passionate love for his boyhood friend Claude becomes an emotional obsession immersed in unrequited love and the futile longing for the tenderness that is not to be.

After toying with each others desires in an afternoon cafe there is a brief moment and a clue to be seen of Claude's journey as the two young boys are about to leave that cafe. Prior to leaving the cafe watch for Claude's reaction to the man on the street. That is a clue to Claude's divergent emotional and sexual journey which becomes distinctly evident in the climactic scene of the film.
