. . "the blood of man
stained red the dirt
of the Mississippi land."
Locked within the confines of a rural Mississippi town, Red Dirt offers the story of a young man's search to belong in this sublime expression of love and reconciliation. At only twenty, Griffith is struggling with the responsibilities of caring for his unwell aunt, grieving the loss of the family's matriarch, and his own dreams of leaving Pine Apple.
With the arrival of a stranger, Griffith's carefully constructed walls of shame and silence begin to come down and his life takes a very unexpected turn, the possibility of escape and homoerotic fulfillment.
Red Dirt opens with lush images of rain-drenched faces and half-naked bodies lying entwined against the gnarled roots of a tree and slowly, the movie unwinds the story of Griffith (Dan Montgomery), the "trapped" young man, the madness of his invalid aunt (Karen Black), his sexual liaison, cousin Emily (Aleksa Palladino), and the stranger (Walton Goggins).
At first, you might think that Red Dirt threatens to drown in the tortured emotions of a Southern Gothic novel, but the excellent performances of the entire ensemble slowly build a rich, affecting web of hope and passion. I am a fan of Nathan Barr who did the original motion picture score and I have included the films score.

'Seres extravagantes'
(Odd People Out) . .
This film is an episodic look at the life of Cuban poet and novelist, Reinaldo Arenas (1943-1990), from his childhood in Oriente, province in Cuba to his death in New York City. As a young teen he joins Castro's rebels convinced of the merits of the revolution. By 1964, he is in Havana. He meets the wealthy Pepe, an early lover; a love-hate relationship between them lasts for years.
As the reality of the consequences of the revolution become evident his support for the revolution disappears. His openly gay behavior is a way to spite the government. His writing and homosexuality get him into trouble and he spends two years in prison, writing letters for other inmates and smuggling out a novel. He befriends Lázaro Gomes Garriles, with whom he lives stateless and in poverty in Manhattan after leaving Cuba in the Mariel boat-lift. When asked why he writes, he cheerfully replies, "Revenge."

"...shatter the nation's
brutalizing silence on
matters of sexual
and racial difference."
Marlon Riggs’ 1989 semi-documentary film Tongues Untied seeks, in its author's words to, "...shatter the nation's brutalizing silence on matters of sexual and racial difference." The film blends documentary footage with personal account and fiction in an attempt to depict the specificity of black gay identity.
The "silence" referred to throughout the film is that of black gay men who are unable to express themselves because of the prejudices of white and black heterosexual society. The narrative structure of Tongues Untied is both interesting and unconventional. Besides including documentary footage detailing North American black gay culture Riggs also tells of his own experiences as a gay man. These include the realizing of his sexual identity and of coping with the deaths of many of his friends to AIDS.
Other elements within the film include footage of the civil rights movement and clips of Eddie Murphy performing a homophobic stand-up routine. At the time of its release the film was considered controversial because of its frank portrayal of gay sexuality. At the time Presidential candidate Pat Buchanan cited Tongues Untied as an example of how President Bush was using taxpayer's money to fund "pornographic art". In his defense Riggs stated that, "Implicit in the much overworked rhetoric of community standards is the assumption of only one central community (patriarchal, heterosexual and usually white) and only one overarching cultural standard ditto."

FATHER AND SON (Otets i Syn) (2003) (Russia) (Aleksandr Sokurov) (Language Russian) (Subtitled in English)
Dissecting the bond between them - a bond that has as much to do with fiercely macho competition as love - Sukorov mythologises the father as a strong, immovable figure who must be dispatched in order for the son to flourish. Physicality dominates the film, from the opening shots of the pair entwined naked on a bed like lovers, to the boy's hand-to-hand combat classes which Sukorov shoots in long takes as transfixed by the rough and tumble of male bodies. After the breathtaking pomp and circumstance of Russian Ark, Father And Son is full of intimate moments. Shot through yellow filters, the cinematography basks in the golden glow of a setting sun. The frame seems distorted, while the sets (shot in Lisbon for Russia) are deliberately artificial and stage-like. Most striking of all, the soundtrack is looped and layered with a series of unsettling effects, making it as rich and diffuse as the film itself. "DREAMILY SEDUCTIVE... PROFOUNDLY DISTURBING" Underlying it all is a religious allegory. "A father's love crucifies. A loving son lets himself be crucified," whispers the dad as he explains the joys of submitting to authority. Yet as it links paternalism, militarism, and nationalism, this achingly beautiful film proves dreamily seductive but also profoundly disturbing.
"Physicality dominates
the film, from the opening
shots of the pair entwined
naked on a bed like lovers . . "
Described by Aleksandr Sukorov as "the incarnation of a fairytale", Father and Son is the amazingly mysterious second installment in the director's planned trilogy about family relationships (the first was Mother and Son). It charts the relationship between a man (Andrei Shchetinin) and his offspring (Aleksei Nejmyshev) who live on the top floor of an old house. The father is a veteran of some unspecified war; the son of an army recruit. The spend their days gazing into each other's eyes and talking about their dead wife and mother.

Andy Warhol...
a kind of LaBrea Tarpit
for a vivid and talented
collection of oddballs . .
Andy Warhol was a phenomenon who warrants a lot of explaining: a completely colorless mega-star celebrity, and a kind of LaBrea Tarpit for a vivid and talented collection of oddballs in the New York scene.
He fostered their continued degeneration into weird lifestyles and heavy drug use; and at the same time acted as their mentor, agent, and sponsor.
One artist who came to be part of Warhol's "scene" was Jean Michel Basquiat, an antisocial street-bum who went from writing graffiti on alley walls to being the toast of New York City's art world.
This film biography chronicles the progression of Basquiat (Jeffrey Wright) and his progression from living in cardboard boxes to penthouses, his romances, his drug use, and his death in 1988 at age 27.
Along the way, he never stopped detesting the rich, including art agent Bruno Bischofberger (Dennis Hopper), and he never lost his naivete. Warhol (David Bowie) picks up some of the pieces as Basquiat lurches through the art scene. Cameo appearances by Tatum O'Neal and Courtney Love add spice to this interesting film.

'Basquiat' Soundtrack:
Few film soundtracks capture the essence or personality of their subject matter as beautifully as the collection of songs culled from Basquiat. Jean Michel Basquiat's charisma was based in the many facets of his character and his art, and there's a song here for a good portion of his ever-changing moods. "Public Image," by PiL is a cynical sneer matching Basquiat's own disillusionment over his fame. The inclusion of the undulating rap/funk masterpiece "White Lines" by Grandmaster Flash, plays almost like a cautionary tale, while the hopelessness of Joy Division's "These Days" seems like a theme for the bleak emotional state the painter sometimes experienced. There are, of course, songs that reflect the period of Basquiat's rise from the '70s until his untimely death in the '80s. --Steve Gdula

. . transvestite date in tow . .
Wonder Boys is one of those movies in which
more twists and turns disrupt the life of the hero
in one weekend than would bother most of us our whole lives. Professor Grady Tripp (Michael Douglas) is an aging one-novel wunderkind at a small Pittsburgh college who's laboring on his seven-years-in-the-making, 2000-plus page second opus with no end in sight.
The morning of the college's literary lollapalooza, WordFest, Grady's wife leaves him; that evening, his mistress (Frances McDormand) announces she's pregnant (she's also the chancellor of the school, as well as the wife of Grady's boss).
Grady's voracious editor (Robert Downey Jr.) is also in town, transvestite date in tow, determined to read the highly anticipated new book; there's also the nubile student (Katie Holmes), who seems more than willing to ease Grady's pain. And then there's James Leer (Tobey Maguire), the mordant and brilliant writing student who's the catalyst for Grady's lost weekend, which involves a soon-to-be-dead blind dog, a stolen car, and the jacket that Marilyn Monroe wore when she wed Joe DiMaggio.
Had enough flights of fancy? It's only the beginning, and in the hands of director Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential) and screenwriter Steve Kloves (The Fabulous Baker Boys), Wonder Boys will have you begging for more. Adroitly adapting Michael Chabon''s novel and distilling it to its droll, melancholy essence, Kloves and Hanson have fashioned a briskly unsentimental and darkly funny tale; these characters may be down on their luck, but they sure don't feel sorry for themselves.
Douglas, by turns dryly sarcastic and sincerely heartfelt, single-handedly makes up for years of alpha-male posturing as the passive pothead Tripp, and whoever thought of pairing him with the resilient McDormand is brilliant--they convey the complexities and history of their relationship in a single glance or movement.
And under Hanson's guidance, the rest of the cast is truly exceptional, with Maguire in a breakthrough performance and Downey at his manic best. The ending of Wonder Boys may feel a little too pat, but after everything these characters have been through, a happy ending seems a just reward. ~Mark Englehart

'The Burnham family
joins the cinematic short
list of great dysfunctional
American families . . '
From its first gliding aerial shot of a generic suburban street, American Beauty moves with a mesmerizing confidence and acuity epitomized by Kevin Spacey's calm narration. Spacey is Lester Burnham, a harried man whose midlife awakening is the spine of the story, and his very first lines hook us with their teasing fatalism--like Sunset Boulevard's Joe Gillis, Burnham tells us his story from beyond the grave. It's an audacious start for a film that justifies that audacity.
Weaving social satire, domestic tragedy, and whodunit into a single package, Alan Ball's first theatrical script dares to blur generic lines and keep us off balance, winking seamlessly from dark, scabrous comedy to deeply moving drama.
The Burnham family joins the cinematic short list of great dysfunctional American families, as Lester is pitted against his manic, materialistic realtor wife, Carolyn (Annette Bening, making the most of a mostly unsympathetic role) and his sullen, contemptuous teenage daughter, Jane (Thora Birch, utterly convincing in her edgy balance of self-absorption and wistful longing). Into their lives come two catalytic outsiders. A young cheerleader (Mena Suvari) jolts Lester into a sexual epiphany that blooms into a second adolescence. And an eerily calm young neighbor (Wes Bentley) transforms both Lester and Jane with his canny influence.
Credit another big-screen newcomer, English theatrical director Sam Mendes, with expertly juggling these potentially disjunctive elements into a superb ensemble piece that achieves a stylized pace without lapsing into transparent self-indulgence. Mendes has shrewdly insured his success with a solid crew of stage veterans, yet he's also made an inspired discovery in Bentley, whose Ricky Fitts becomes a fulcrum for both plot and theme. Cinematographer Conrad Hall's sumptuous visual design further elevates the film, infusing the beige interiors of the Burnhams' lives with vivid bursts of deep crimson, the color of roses--and of blood. ~Sam Sutherland

. . at times humorous,

The Times of Harvey Milk, directed by Rob Epstein, documents the political career of Harvey Milk who was San Francisco's first openly gay supervisor. The film, at times humorous, at times nostalgic, and at times tragic, documents the rise of Milk from a neighborhood activist to becoming a symbol of gay political achievement, through to his assassination at San Francisco's city hall.
The film was produced after Milk's death using archival footage, so that Milk is credited as the lead (posthumously).
Other politicians including San Francisco mayor George Moscone (who was assassinated with Milk), and Moscone's successor and now United States Senator Dianne Feinstein appear in archival footage. The movie opens with a tearful Feinstein delivering her announcement to the media that Moscone and Milk had been assassinated by Dan White.
Also featured in the film is then-schoolteacher Tom Ammiano who has been a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors since 1994. The film was narrated by Harvey Fierstein.

BAD EDUCATION (La Mala Educacion) (2004) (Spain) (Pedro Almodóvar) (Language: Spanish) (Subtitled in English)
. . people will pay
any price to
ensure that
their stories
are told . .
Writer/director Pedro Almodóvar's dark, sexy Hitchcock homage is his best work since his Oscar-winning All About My Mother, and deepened by a sun-dappled sadness.
Handsome, enigmatic Ángel (Gael García Bernal) arrives at the Spanish movie offices of director Enrique Goded (Fele Martinez) and happily proclaims that he's actually Enrique's long-lost school chum Ignacio--an announcement that is both less than convincing and more than it seems.
A novice actor, Ángel pitches a semi-autobiographical screenplay in which he's determined to star, a revenge-laden reflection of the doomed love he and Enrique shared as boys before a pedophile priest cruelly intervened.
The script, and the lost days it recalls, carefully unfurls into a series of brooding movies-within-movies and memories-inside-memories, which allow the sensual, multiple-role-playing Bernal to give the performance of his young career--among other things, he makes a stunningly convincing drag queen--and Almodóvar the opportunity to movingly suggest that people will pay any price to ensure that their stories are told.

. ."the Nazi party

Sean Mathias directed this screen adaptation of Martin Sherman's award-winning play about the persecution of homosexuals by Nazis during World War II. In Germany, the Nazi party's program of genocide against any and all perceived "enemies" is coming into full swing when the party begins a violent purge of homosexuals in its membership.
Max (Clive Owen), a bisexual playboy, is attending an orgy thrown by drag queen "Greta" (Mick Jagger) and featuring a number of party members when the festivities are raided by the police; Max and his lover Rudy (Brian Webber) escape, but they are later arrested and sentenced to a concentration camp.
En route to the camp, Max betrays Rudy and arranges to be given a yellow identification star, marking him as a Jew, instead of a pink triangle, which would signify him as gay; while the Jews are destined to be executed, gay prisoners receive even more brutal treatment from the guards.
While incarcerated, Max meets Horst (Lothaire Bluteau), an inmate who proudly wears the pink triangle. Max and Horst fall in love with each other, and Horst's bravery leads Max to accept his sexual identity.

TOUCH OF PINK (+ Selecciones de Soundtrack) (2004) (Canadá y Reino Unido) (Ian Igbal Rashid) (Lenguaje Inglés)
Life with Cary Grant . .
Alim (Jim Mistry) is a young, South-Asian Canadian, who thinks he's living with the spirit of Cary Grant (Kyle MacLachlan). He's living in London, working as a stills photographer in the movie business and trying with Cary;s help to live up to the glamorous standards of old Hollywood.
Alim's partner Giles (Kristen Holden-Ried) is a handsome economist whos's charming, intelligent, comfortable with who he is and completely unaware of his lover's fantasy life. Alim and Giles are happy together despite Alim's secret, until Alim's mother Nuru (Suleka Mathew) shows up for a visit, an the whole charade begins to unravel.
Nure, a widow, lives in Toronto, in complete ignorance of her son's life in London and in an intense but loving, sibling rivalry with sister Dolly (Veena Sood), which she is decidedly losing. When Dolly's son Khaled, a dentist, announces his big wedding plans to a Muslim girl, Nuru despairs. She becomes determined to get Alim back to Toronto to at least attend the wedding festivities and return into the fold of the family, and hopefully, to find his own bride.
Nuru's arrival in London creates a problem for Alim but it's the sort of problem a man like Cary Grant can handle and he confidently suggest a solution. The plan seems perfect to Alim, but it comes as a shock to poor Giles, who nevertheless agrees to play along.
When Neru won't be put off by Alim's bachelor ruse, and insists that he must find a nice girl to marry. Cary always thinking on his feet suggest a finance to be played by Giles sister Delia. But following an argument Alim angrily admits to his mother that he's not engaged and storms off to work. Cary follows him impressed by the documentary style of telling the truth.
Meanwhile, in an effort to smooth things over, Giles takes Nuru out for a day of sightseeing in London and slowly and unexpectedly Nuru grows fond of Giles. The trip awakens memories of the time she spent in London years before whe she was trying to get over the loss of her husband, and a Cary Grant fan herself , she was searching for he own Hollywood ending. Giles seems like the sort of man she wishes she had met all those years before. But Giles can't be Nuru's Hollywood ending, as a jealous Alim makes clear when he finally comes out to his mother.
Nuru is horrified and feels betrayed, and immediately make plans to go home to Toronto. Her dreams, and her chances of trumping Dolly are shattered. The wonderful wedding and little grandchildren she had hoped for will never happen and she fears that she won't have a happy ending of any kink. Giles is appalled by Alim's treatment of Nuru and leaves. Alim is distraught and frustrated by Cary's eternally upbeat and normally welcome advice. Realizing that the best solution to his problems is the truth, and that illusion isn't always the answer.
Alim sets out for Toronto. He hopes to finally come clean but instead ends up telling more lies this time to protect Nuru. Alim goes to all the family pre-wedding celebrations and much to Nuru's pleasure starts to enjoy himself. Cary fearing Alim is slipping away decided to "Indianising" himself to fit in. The groom to be Khaled comes over to see Alim after his stag night He wants to start with a kiss and Nuru overhears appalled. It slowly becomes clear that Khaled has been keeping some secrets of his own and had no intention of being truthful with his soon-t0-be-wife. As Nuru confronts Khaled, she realizes that by contrast Alim is truly honest about who he is and truly in love with Giles. Cary is happy with this scene as he's pretty certain it's time to go back for a happy ending in London as he can't imagine that anyone would now go to Khaled's wedding. But he hasn't counted on how important family is to Nuru and to Cary's surprise, Alim agrees to escort his mother to the event.
It is at the wedding that all of Alim's worlds finally collide. Neru is desperate to be honest with Dolly, Cary is trying to fit in, Khaled is trying to avoid Nuru and Alim, Dillis is determined to maintain dream-wedding perfection and suddenly Giles arrives and Alim realizes he has to choose between his fantasy life with Cary and the earthly pleasures of real life.

"Deep in the heart
of the Bible Belt,
it is evident the fight
for equal rights
is far from over."
It's easy for city dwellers to take gay bars for granted, but Malcolm Ingram presents the other side of the picture. Social opportunities are more limited for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender citizens in rural America.
Deep in the heart of the Bible Belt, it is evident the fight for equal rights is far from over. Homosexuals in these areas lack social outlets, still face cruelty, ridicule and even violence. Despite being attacked on all sides by the Christian coalition, several spirited bar owners have created an oasis for gays to call home a Small Town Gay Bar.
Executive Producer Kevin Smith presents an intimate portrait of these establishments and the patrons who inhabit them. Exploring the gratefulness the patrons feel for these various places we learn there is much more provided than a evening of entertainment. With production assistance from Kevin Smith, Ingram focuses on several communities in Mississippi.
While some gay-themed documentaries are depressing and others inspiring, Small Town Gay Bar is a bit of both. Rick Gladis, for instance, owner of Rumors nightclub, created an oasis for the local GLBT community, but remains closeted from his Pentecostal parents. Scotty Weaver, on the other hand, was open about his orientation--and brutally murdered because of it (Ingram speaks with Weaver's family). As Gladis notes, "As far as being gay in Mississippi, it's hard, it's very hard." Proof comes in the form of Reverend Fred Phelps, who states categorically, "God hates fags."
Other subjects include patrons, bartenders, drag performers, and strippers. In addition, Ingram looks back on bars that have closed over the years, which lends the film a nostalgic air, though he concludes with new beginnings for two of them. Small Town Gay Bar isn't as heart-wrenching as Paris Is Burning or For the Bible Tells Me So, which cover similar territory, but that doesn't make its voices any less valuable--and a soundtrack filled with alternative acts like the Hidden Cameras and Broken Social Scene is a nice touch. ~Kathleen C.
