'Finally Finding a Mate,

Don't be alarmed if during the opening moments of ''Beautiful Thing,'' you have the dislocating sense of being catapulted back three decades to the mad, mod world of ''Georgy Girl.''

That's because the cheery voice on the soundtrack belongs to none other than Mama Cass Elliot belting ''It's Getting Better,'' a late-60's hit whose jangly folk-pop sound echoes the theme song from the movie that made Lynn Redgrave a star. So what in heaven's name is Mama Cass's music doing in a 90's drama about two gay teen-age boys in southeast London who fall in love and come out together? We shall soon see.

'Beautiful Thing' is a heartwarming story of two young men coming to grips with their sexuality and the effect it has on the people in their lives.''Beautiful Thing' focuses on three neighbors, Jamie (Glen Berry), Ste (Scott Neal) and Leah (Tameka Empson) on Thamesmead Estate in south-east London.

In the middle flat, Jamie lives with his pub manager mom, Sandra (Linda Henry). Jamie is going through a few problems at school, much to the chagrin of his gutsy mother who is too busy trying to hold down a relationship with a dippy younger man, Tony (Ben Daniels). Next door lives Ste, sporty and good looking, a quiet boy who stoically endures regular beatings by his father, a drunken former boxer with a chip on his shoulder and his brother who also beats on him. The atmosphere is tense at the best of times. On the other side live Leah and her mom. Leah has been kicked out of school and passes her time listening to old records. Kooky Leah has an unaccountable obsession with the singer Mama Cass Elliott, who died in 1974 and whose records she enjoys playing full blast at 2 in the morning, to the fury of neighbors.

This doggedly uplifting music plays a crucial role in setting the tone of the film whose mixture of working-class realism and feel-good fantasy resurrects the spirit of 1960's movies set in swinging England. ''Georgy Girl,'' you may recall, was a Cinderella story about a gawky Plain Jane who wins Prince Charming. ''Beautiful Thing'' is a Cinderella story about two gawky Plain Joes who win each other.

Life drifts along until one night Ste is beaten up by his brother and is taken into the safety of Sandra's flat. Sleeping embarrassed head-to-toe, Jamie realizes that he is in love with Ste. As the bullying continues, Ste spends more and more time with Jamie. With Jamie, Ste finds a tenderness he has so far missed out on in life. He finds himself drawn more and more to Jamie.

But it is not as straightforward as that. How can you be gay on this tough estate? As Ste and Jamie are sorting things out in their heads, Sandra discovers the truth. She knows she cannot kick Jamie out. Her love for him is too strong, and she decides to try and understand. Sandra, who is poorly educated and thinks she knows more than she does, solemnly tries to reassure her son, there is a place where gay people can go and live without fear of harassment: ''It's an island in the Mediterranean called Lesbian.''It is clear now that things will forever be different for Jamie and his mother, but Ste can never tell his family the truth.

The film ends on an optimistic note with Jamie and Ste unashamedly slow dancing in the sunshine in the courtyard of their apartment complex with the 'world' watching. Sandra may be a feisty and meddlesome mom (she spies on her son and follows the lovers to a gay bar), but when everyone's cards are finally out on the table, she proves militantly supportive and she and Leah usually at each others throats, reconcile their differences and she takes Leah's hand and they join Jamie and Ste and slow dance along side of them.

'Beautiful Thing,'' directed by Hettie Macdonald from a screenplay by Jonathan Harvey, is very well acted. Mr. Berry and Mr. Neal capture every blush and awkward gesture of two shy adolescents stumbling together in terror out onto some very thin ice. Ms. Henry is wonderful as a woman whose fighting spirit masks a streak of hard-bitten tenderness.

One of the dour running jokes in ''Johns,'' Scott Silver's fine, tough-minded study of Los Angeles street hustlers, is that many of the characters who cruise Santa Monica Boulevard buying and selling young male flesh happen to be named John. (One buyer is even named John Wayne.) Added to the fact that men who patronize prostitutes are traditionally known as ''johns,'' the joke takes on an extra wrinkle of jaundiced humor.

But the only John who really matters in this gritty portrait of desperate, dead-end lives is a wiry hustler with a tattooed teardrop under one squinty eye. As the film opens, this John, played by David Arquette with a taut, understated ferocity that is absolutely on target, has his grimy sneakers plucked off his feet along with $140 in life savings while he is sleeping in a park. It is 7 A.M. on Christmas Eve, and Los Angeles is in the middle of a heat wave. As John dashes barefoot down the boulevard, he collides with a wilted-looked street Santa and impulsively makes off with his red-and-white stocking hat.

Not only is tomorrow Christmas, it is also John's 21st birthday. As a present to himself, he has booked a room at a fancy hotel where he plans to spend 24 hours living like a rich person, ''eating burgers and watching cable TV.'' But the theft puts a damper on his plans. For much of the rest of the film, John and his worshipful sidekick and boarding-house roommate, Donner (Lukas Haas), try to raise the money for John to live out his king-for-a-day fantasy.


Donner is none too bright. In picking up customers, Donner has no instinct for how to apply John's instructions to the situation.

When a phone call from Donner to his mother results in job opportunities for the two friends as lifeguards at a theme park in Missouri, the fact that neither can swim hardly seems an obstacle. They immediately make plans to take a bus east, where Donner envisions the two of them lolling around the pool sipping pina coladas.

''Johns,'' like ''Midnight Cowboys,'' explores the theme of friendship in a dog-eat-dog environment. Donner, who may or may not be in love with his mentor, offers unstinting devotion to John, who gruffly insists that friendship among hustlers is impossible. In the story's nastiest twist, one that feels dramatically forced, Donner's concern for John has unexpectedly disastrous consequences.

The movie abounds with sharply drawn peripheral characters. There is Jimmy the Warlock (Terrence Dashon Howard), a self-professed Buddhist who brutally prosecutes street justice for an unseen drug kingpin, and there is Nikki (Alanna Ubach), John's foulmouthed speed-rapping sweetheart who is a hyperagitated nightmare. Then there are the various johns, most prominently Elliott Gould in the role of a lecherous married man who foolishly welcomes John into his luxurious home for a quickie while his wife is out Christmas shopping.

The film embellishes the story with a overlay of Christmas symbolism. The movie insists on making John a full-fledged Christ symbol, ringed with angelic choruses of ''Silent Night.'' ''Johns'' doesn't need Jesus; it doesn't even need Christmas to makes its grim, tawdry little tale hit home.

For a 13-year-old boy like Filipe, (played by José Afonso Pimentel) the prospect of a summer vacation in the Azores with his father (played by João Lagarto) is like a dream come true. It's a time for them to become re-acquainted and it's also a time for his first girlfriend and annoying questions to his father about love and sex.

'But dreams are sometimes just a way to avoid facing reality...'

In the first hour of the film, we see 13 year old Filipe on holiday in the Azores, with just his father. The man is trying to get to know the boy, who harbors a severe grudge for the nature of their non-relationship. Eventually, it becomes clear that the man is terminally ill.

Suddenly, it becomes evident that the whole story to this point is a fabrication of the boys imagination. In school he claims in an essay that his lawyer father is dead, but we then see the all the same actors in Lisbon who were the characters in Filipe's Azores odyssey, all living rather meaningless and routine lives. Filipe's estrangement from his father is obviously permanent and the boy blames his mother for not having had an abortion which would have spared him from his loneliness and misery. This is a poignant and touching film from Portuguese director Luís Filipe Rocha and as noted in the above photo, José Afonso Pimentel (Filipe) has become quite the stunning young man.

Andy Warhol was a phenomenon who warrants a lot of explaining: a completely colorless mega-star celebrity, and a kind of LaBrea Tarpit for a vivid and talented collection of oddballs in the New York scene.

He fostered their continued degeneration into weird lifestyles and heavy drug use; and at the same time acted as their mentor, agent, and sponsor.

One artist who came to be part of Warhol's "scene" was Jean Michel Basquiat, an antisocial street-bum who went from writing graffiti on alley walls to being the toast of New York City's art world.

This film biography chronicles the progression of Basquiat (Jeffrey Wright) and his progression from living in cardboard boxes to penthouses, his romances, his drug use, and his death in 1988 at age 27.

Along the way, he never stopped detesting the rich, including art agent Bruno Bischofberger (Dennis Hopper), and he never lost his naivete. Warhol (David Bowie) picks up some of the pieces as Basquiat lurches through the art scene. Cameo appearances by Tatum O'Neal and Courtney Love add spice to this interesting film.

'Basquiat' Soundtrack:

Few film soundtracks capture the essence or personality of their subject matter as beautifully as the collection of songs culled from Basquiat. Jean Michel Basquiat's charisma was based in the many facets of his character and his art, and there's a song here for a good portion of his ever-changing moods. "Public Image," by PiL is a cynical sneer matching Basquiat's own disillusionment over his fame. The inclusion of the undulating rap/funk masterpiece "White Lines" by Grandmaster Flash, plays almost like a cautionary tale, while the hopelessness of Joy Division's "These Days" seems like a theme for the bleak emotional state the painter sometimes experienced. There are, of course, songs that reflect the period of Basquiat's rise from the '70s until his untimely death in the '80s. --Steve Gdula
