"Sex, drugs & punk rock.
Add violence & time
travel & you have . .
. . Jubilee
"

Derek Jarman's 'Jubilee' (1978) is a wildly beautiful film which strikes a precarious, and compelling, balance between sheer anarchy and genuine tenderness. Jubilee begins when Queen Elizabeth I (played with quiet power by Jenny Runacre, who also portrays Bod) has her court alchemist, the historical John Dee, summon Ariel. The sloe-eyed spirit with huge hands (whom Jarman describes as having "a glitter punk scintilla") transports all of them 400 years into the future – just beyond our own time – to a dystopic London, which has become a literal wasteland, overrun with violence and decay.

Let Jarman summarize Jubilee for you in his own words: "Law and order has finally been abolished and do-your-own-thing is the order of the day. The church is a strip club [and Buckingham Palace a recording studio].... Open war between all factions of society. A gang of bike girls centered at H.Q. in Southwark, rape and kill all adversaries, led by the Queen of Punk, Bod [Bodicea].... The music of groups like The Slits, Sex Pistols plays incessantly to rapturous reception. The film is anarchic and very beautiful."

"Leave the guy alone, he's better than a vibrator and he's bigger"

The film has misleadingly been called a "Punk movie." It is much more than that, although the then-nascent movement informs the film in many ways, from music to casting to tone. Punk's heyday was 1975–80, with its two key albums – The Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks and The Clash's The Clash – both appearing in 1977, the year Jubilee was filmed (coinciding with Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee). Punk provided a clarion voice for alienated teenagers in its mix of hard-driving rock, socially aware but simple lyrics – that crystallized the mood of anger, powerlessness, and rebellion in the face of a severe economic recession – and a confrontational style which extended from the songs to the fashions of its devotees. 'Jubilee' provides a virtual catalog of the Punk Look, from Mad's (Toyah Willcox in a stunning performance) close-cropped hair dyed Day-Glo orange to angsty graffiti which covers almost every wall to the scrawled quotation from 'Psycho' which ends "...wouldn't even harm a fly" which fills the back of the jackets worn by the female biker gang. You may recall Hitchcock's final scene, when the strait-jacketed Norman Bates, "possessed" by his dead mother, tells us how harmless he now is, yeah, right. Even a small detail like this resonates, since the tangled connection between gender identity and violence is one of Jarman's key themes.

"Most people would hang up the phone,
she's hanging on for dear life."

Jarman's brilliance as an artist allows him to meld all of these eclectic sources, and more (including his two wildly diverse stated sources: Punk fan magazines of the day and Frances A. Yates's The Art of Memory (1966), a classic study of how people learned to retain vast stores of knowledge before the invention of the printed page), into a film of consummate originality and power.

He also brings beauty and emotional resonance to the film through his characters. He creates a resonance with these eccentric, and sometimes lethal, allegorical people. Jarman is well-known for including friends and lovers in his films. Not only does this provide a cost-effective approach to casting, it also brings a deeply personal connection to his films. Jarman not only published his autobiography in book form, throughout his life he also shot hundreds of hours of Super 8 footage. Some of those "home movies" found their way into his feature films, including the surreal "Jordan's Dance" and Jarman also re-edited and incorporated into Jubilee "Amyl's Dance,".

"I just love a man without its uniform."

Despite its Punk trappings, ultimately the film seems more about Punk than of it. How Jarman uses then-rising star Adam Ant reveals much about the film and filmmaker. When Crabs meets, and instantly tries to pick up, Kid (Adam Ant's character), she coos that he is "gorgeous." With his sweetly boyish persona – made just a bit wild by the black leather and painted-on lower sideburns – it is no wonder that Jarman, as reported by a friend on the DVD's documentary, fell "madly in love with him." But how Jarman uses Kid in the film may reveal at least as much about his sociopolitical insights as his romantic frustration. When Kid is asked what he does, he replies, "Nothing... Music." And throughout he is as passive offstage as he is frenzied onstage. His performance with his group, Adam and the Ants, is one of only two or three full musical numbers in the film; and it strikingl
y reveals Jarman's gifts as one of the originators of music videos.

But Kid is unable to connect with anyone, including Crabs. He seems content to lie on his stomach while Crabs pulls his t-shirt up and strokes his back, and that only because she has promised to introduce him to Borgia Ginz (played by "Orlando," aka Jack Birkett), the mogul who controls the entire world's media and hence political, and even religious, power structure. (Ginz
shares a palatial mansion in Dorset with an aged Adolf Hitler.) Ginz is, of course, taken with Kid and signs him, immediately rechristening him "Scum." Claiming that's commercial. It's all they [the audience] deserve."

"It's like pornography; better than the real thing."

In the "triangle" between the two teasingly incestuous brothers, Sphinx and Angel (who utters the classic line, "I didn't know I was dead till I was fifteen."), and the artist Viv there was real connection and tenderness between all th
ree of them, despite what many people would consider the highly "problematic" nature of their relationship. The brothers read as a gay couple and Jarman describes Viv as a "butch dyke." Yet they go to bed together; although the morning after Sphinx and Angel again seem more interested in each other than in Viv. What makes their relationship so poignant is that Jarman then goes on to show us their day together, which is the most genial sequence in the film. They also introduce us to the most hilarious character, Max – the Bingo king and former pimp, who now has a huge garden entirely of artificial flowers. (Max is played to the hilt by Neil Kennedy, who was a comparable character with the same name in Jarman's previous film, 'Sebastiane'.) You will not soon forget what happens when Max, horrified, spots a caterpillar on one of his plastic plants.

"Scum. That's commercial. It's all they [the audience] deserve."

Perhaps the most haunting, and disturbing, image of Kid is the close-up of Kid kissing his own image on TV and a moment later, he licks the screen lasciviously with his tongue, giving a decidedly postmodern twist to the myth of Narcissus. And on still another level, Jarman was showing his foresight into Punk's future. Just a few years after the release of Jubilee, as the filmmaker wrote in his memoir Dancing Ledge, "the film turned prophetic.... the streets burned in Brixton and Tosteth. Adam [Ant] was on Top of the Pops and signed up with Margaret Thatcher to sing at the Falklands Ball." Jarman concluded the passage by repeating the chilling words he gave Borgia Ginz at the end of 'Jubilee': "They all sign up in one way or another."

" . . and cries and cries, clutching herself, rolling . . "

The film's most overwhelming moment comes from an unlikely source: Mad. At one point, she and Amyl go off on a vendetta against two of the fascistic police officers. They find one, alone, taking a pee. Mad whips out her knife, as she and Amyl jump him, wrestle him to the ground, kicking and screaming. Then Mad, in a frenzy, castrates him. Although this is not Jubilee's only scene of "ultra violence," the result is unprecedented. Mad breaks down – the only time any character does this in the film – and cries and cries, clutching herself, rolling. Shockingly, this moment feels absolutely real. Significantly for the film, as actress Toyah Willcox (Mad) notes in the documentary on the DVD, Jarman shot a huge amount of film for this project. But this was the only instance where he included the "extended" footage. By implication, Jarman forces us to confront the full human toll taken by life in a completely anarchic world, without any order or social restraint. Although much of the film has depicted an ebullient, even enticing, picture of life in this near-future wasteland, this scene stops us cold. It forces us to reconsider the price of absolute "freedom" – and the deeply complex connections between anarchy and beauty – even as it humanizes the most dehumanized character in the film. It's an extraordinary, raw, literally visceral scene, and one which most will not soon forget.

No one can live in such a world, even in its ultimately commercialized form as 1970s Punk, with mass-produced albums and Punk boutiques. But Jarman ends his film on a much more subtly problematic note. In a hauntingly beautiful coda, we see our Elizabethan time travelers back in their own "Golden Age," as they walk along a placidly beautiful sea coast. But Elizabeth longs for a still earlier, and more pure, time, when she asks, "Oh, John Dee, do you remember those days? The whispered secrets at Oxford, like the sweet sea breeze? Codes and counter-codes." The 'doubleness' of her "codes" remark reminds us of the complexity of her reign: Does Jarman expect us not to know about the Machiavellian (or Borgian) intrigues, and murders, which marked the historical Elizabeth's court? As Mad remarks near the film's beginning, "There are no heroes." – yet Jarma
n acknowledges how we long for them, for a leader like Elizabeth, whom he describes (in his notes on Jubilee) as "The Virgin Queen, distant yet sympathetic, the paradigm of royalty." And what about John Dee, with his multiple nature, as another possible "hero"? He was a man half in the superstitious past (as an alchemist and magician) and half in the modern world (as one of the first scientists). The film nicely, and again - ironically, circles in on itself. Happiness is swept away with hope to be replaced by despair, all at the doing of the punks who are only acting out of what they feel is justice. Self destruction reigns supreme.
Again, Jarman gives us no clear, or simple guides for our own lives. ~ J. Clark

"Voyeurism is Participation"

'SHORTBUS' explores the lives of several emotionally challenged characters as they navigate the comic and tragic intersections between love and sex in and around a modern-day underground salon. A sex therapist who has never had an orgasm, a dominatrix who is unable to connect, a gay couple who are deciding whether to open up their relationship, and the people who weave in and out of their lives, all converge on a weekly gathering called Shortbus: a mad nexus of art, music, politics and polysexual carnality. Set in a post-9/11, Bush-exhausted New York City, 'SHORTBUS' tells its story with sexual frankness, suggesting new ways to reconcile questions of the mind, pleasures of the flesh and imperatives of the heart. Written and directed by John Cameron Mitchell (who previously starred in and directed the film adaptation of his international stage hit, "Hedwig and the Angry Inch"), "Shortbus" explores the lives of several characters living in present-day New York as they navigate the comic and tragic intersections between love and sex. Male and female, straight and gay, the characters find one and other - and eventually find themselves - when they all converge at a weekly underground salon called "Shortbus," a mad nexus of art, music, politics, and polysexual carnality. Mitchell developed the film's story along with his ensemble cast, all of whom are making their feature film debuts, and who were selected after submitting videotaped interviews/auditions in response to a well-publicized open casting call posted on a website. Over a half million people visited the website and nearly 500 people sent in tapes before the final seven leading performers -characters were selected to workshop the storyline with Mitchell.
'Shortbus' was one of the sensations of the 2006 Cannes Film Festival where following it's sold out premier it received a ten minute standing ovation.

Soundtrack: "Shortbus'
His follow-up to 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch' may not be a music movie per se, but music is indeed important to the aesthetic of John Cameron Mitchell's 'Shortbus'. While some soundtracks go out of the way to be diverse, this one prefers a uniform mood, and that mood is reflective, relatively lo-fi indie rock. This is exemplified by Scott Matthew's five new tracks. The first, "Upside Down," gives off a strong whiff of late-period Magnetic Fields (maybe it's the ukulele), and the remaining four stay within these parameters of predominantly acoustic, forlorn introspection. Other paragons of American indie creativity include Yo La Tengo (the previously unreleased "Wizard's Sleeve"), Azure Ray, Animal Collective, and guest Canadians the Hidden Cameras. Rocker and former MuchMusic VJ Sook-Yin Lee (who plays a sex therapist in the movie) sings one of the best tracks, the pared-down but catchy "Beautiful." Two songs by Sweden's the Ark mercifully inject a welcome dose of disco excitement, while jazz singer Anita O'Day sounds as fantastically smoky as ever on "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby." Look also for Justin Bond (a.k.a. Kiki of Kiki and Herb) as he delivers the elegiac coda with the melancholy "In the End." ~ Elisabeth Vincentelli

"All art is against lived expression. How can you compare flesh and blood against pigment?!!....I have trapped pure spirit in matter!"

Rarely would 5 stars not be sufficient to express the magnitude of greatness in a film, but Derek Jarman's 'CARAVAGGIO', the director's homage to the late Baroque painter, his life, his view of art, his sexuality and his struggle with life versus art, staggers the mind with the intense detail and love with which Jarman treats this fascinating and tortured artist. The film's director and the film's subject is best summed up in Caravaggio's quote while painting; "All art is against lived expression. How can you compare flesh and blood against pigment?!!....I have trapped pure spirit in matter!" This was the creed and the mission, almost Holy Grail of Caravaggio, as well as the late Jarman himself ; to take life and mimic art, and to make art mimic life!

Writer/director Derek Jarman and Italian masterpiece artist Michaelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) cannot and will not be separated in this film. The director and the artist are soul mates in life and art, 400 years apart in time, but indelibly linked in common purpose in life and purpose. Jarman, always the provocateur in film sees Caravaggio the same as himself; struggling against all convention, religion, and social norm to capture the human spirit on canvas and on film. Jarman honors Caravaggio's famous figures that illuminate out of the blackened background of the canvas rendering all of the film's scenes in that same spirit. Actors Nigel Terry, as Caravaggio; Tilda Swinton as Lena the prostitute; Sean Bean as the street trade object of desire Ranuccio Tomassoni; Michael Gough as the pederast Cardinal Del Monte; and Spencer Leigh as the deaf mute who is Caravaggio's lifelong apprentice Jerusalame are all realistically portrayed as the true humans they were in forming Caravaggio's stable of models, friends, rivals, tutors, admirers and jealous lovers, all of which were the real life people who were the John the Baptists, Baachus' and Virgin Mary's of his 50 great masterpieces. Jarman frames each scene as Caravaggio would have seen it; he shows us how the artist saw the human life as it was and painted it into The Divine. This, of course, was a prevailing criticism of the time placed upon Caravaggio's work; he used live models, not pictures, to portray what he was to put to canvas. This upset many other artisrs, and infuriated the Church, though secretly Cardinals and Popes commissioned his work as "intimate chamber pieces known for their homoerotic ambience" but hid them behind curtains in the Salon!)

Derek Jarman
Derek Jarman makes no apology for his open homosexuality, as Caravaggio made no apology for his work and fascination with the male form. Therefore, this film has a strong emotional connection between the filmmaker and the painter; the two understand one another deeply and Nigel Terry, as Caravaggio, is overwhelmingly the artist on screen. The subject of pederasty, older male taking under wing the younger male (which was quite common in the day- not just simply apprenticeship) is openly examined in 'CARAVAGGIO', relationships not only tutorial in the mind, but educational of the body also.

There are many levels on which this film can be viewed. Jarman, undoubtedly intends it to be that way; 'CARAVAGGIO' is about art and the artist, but it is also about human desire, passion in life, and passion in Art.

One viewing of a Jarman film is NEVER sufficient. To see it as pornography (as some are wont to do) does no credit to the filmmaker or the 17th -century genius who gave us paintings such as "Death of the Virgin", "The Incredulity of Thomas", "The Cardsharps","The Calling of St. Matthew", "Amor Vincit Omnia","Boy With a Basket of Fruit", "Young Sick Baachus" as well as "The Entombment of Christ." Jarman cleverly and with awe and reverence "stages" all of these paintings with great precision within his film. Even the famous "The Calling of St. Matthew" is hilariously framed as a sniping news critic types his critique of Caravaggio in a bathtub with the famous "ray of light", that is in the painting, streaming through a window upon the man! Such is the imaginative Jarman, who never shies away from shocking images that to some seem senseless.

Caravaggio the artist, who was sexually open with both men and women, who was put into exile, who needed a papal pardon, who painted life as he saw it, who was constantly arrested for brawling and who died under mysterious and controversial circumstances and whose life has been biographied countless times by "experts" who vehemently disagree about him!

Jarman is not just wanting us to see Caravaggio as a historical figure, but is interested in painting a canvas of the celebration and hardships of humanity on film. ~ Kerrlines

"CARAVAGGIO' features wonderful performances from Nigel Terry, Sean Bean, and in her first role, Tilda Swinton, who was to become Jarman's muse and long time collaborator. A visual treat, it was the first major film production for award winning costume designer Sandy Powell, with luscious production design by Christopher Hobbs.

"Even Midnight Cowboys Have Sunshine Dreams"

One of the dour running jokes in ''Johns,'' Scott Silver's fine, tough-minded study of Los Angeles street hustlers, is that many of the characters who cruise Santa Monica Boulevard buying and selling young male flesh happen to be named John. (One buyer is even named John Wayne.) Added to the fact that men who patronize prostitutes are traditionally known as ''johns,'' the joke takes on an extra wrinkle of jaundiced humor.

But the only John who really matters in this gritty portrait of desperate, dead-end lives is a wiry hustler with a tattooed teardrop under one squinty eye. As the film opens, this John, played by David Arquette with a taut, understated ferocity that is absolutely on target, has his grimy sneakers plucked off his feet along with $140 in life savings while he is sleeping in a park. It is 7 A.M. on Christmas Eve, and Los Angeles is in the middle of a heat wave. As John dashes barefoot down the boulevard, he collides with a wilted-looked street Santa and impulsively makes off with his red-and-white stocking hat.

Not only is tomorrow Christmas, it is also John's 21st birthday. As a present to himself, he has booked a room at a fancy hotel where he plans to spend 24 hours living like a rich person, ''eating burgers and watching cable TV.'' But the theft puts a damper on his plans. For much of the rest of the film, John and his worshipful sidekick and boarding-house roommate, Donner (Lukas Haas), try to raise the money for John to live out his king-for-a-day fantasy.

Although it's easy to predict where the film is headed, ''Johns'' reaches its tragic destination with few missteps. The two friends suggest a post-teen-age 90's version of Ratso Rizzo and Joe Buck from ''Midnight Cowboy,'' with John playing professional mentor to Donner, who has been working the streets for only seven weeks. Donner explains that he was thrown out of the house by his father after announcing that he was gay. Mr. Haas brings to the role an appropriately coarsened variation on the moist, doe-eyed boy-ingenue that has been his movie stock-in-trade for more than a decade.

Donner: "I am not a prostitute. I am an entertainer"

Donner is none too bright. In picking up customers, Donner has no instinct for how to apply John's instructions to the situation.

When a phone call from Donner to his mother results in job opportunities for the two friends as lifeguards at a theme park in Missouri, the fact that neither can swim hardly seems an obstacle. They immediately make plans to take a bus east, where Donner envisions the two of them lolling around the pool sipping pina coladas.

''Johns,'' like ''Midnight Cowboys,'' explores the theme of friendship in a dog-eat-dog environment. Donner, who may or may not be in love with his mentor, offers unstinting devotion to John, who gruffly insists that friendship among hustlers is impossible. In the story's nastiest twist, one that feels dramatically forced, Donner's concern for John has unexpectedly disastrous consequences.

The movie abounds with sharply drawn peripheral characters. There is Jimmy the Warlock (Terrence Dashon Howard), a self-professed Buddhist who brutally prosecutes street justice for an unseen drug kingpin, and there is Nikki (Alanna Ubach), John's foulmouthed speed-rapping sweetheart who is a hyperagitated nightmare. Then there are the various johns, most prominently Elliott Gould in the role of a lecherous married man who foolishly welcomes John into his luxurious home for a quickie while his wife is out Christmas shopping.

The film embellishes the story with a overlay of Christmas symbolism. The movie insists on making John a full-fledged Christ symbol, ringed with angelic choruses of ''Silent Night.'' ''Johns'' doesn't need Jesus; it doesn't even need Christmas to makes its grim, tawdry little tale hit home.

"This road will never end.
It probably goes all
around the world."

Mapping the spaces between fortune and degeneracy, Shakespeare and street cant, Europe and the Pacific Northwest, and gay and straight, My Own Private Idaho is the 1991 masterpiece by director Gus Van Sant. River Phoenix gave the most generous and memory-searing performance of his tragically shortened career as Mike Waters, a narcoleptic street hustler in search of his mother. His best friend, Scott, played by Keanu Reeves, is a son of privilege who fosters plans of rejoining the moneyed world of his father after gallivanting with assorted urchins and ne'er-do-wells. The beautifully symmetrical story that emerges between the two is one of friendship, yearning for lost time, and sexual identity conveyed with a poet's eye for landscape. The camera lingers on abandoned houses in golden fields and time-lapse clouds, providing what T.S. Eliot called "the objective correlative"--external representations of interior emotional states. We're treated to striking iconic sequences like a barn falling from the sky and still-life scenes of carnal entanglement. The supporting cast is a rogues' gallery that includes Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Udo Kier, director William Richert, and a variety of "nonactors" pulled literally off the street to provide documentary veracity to a film that gleefully careens into riffs on Henry IV. Groundbreaking and visually dazzling, My Own Private Idaho is a stirring look at unrequited love, the search of an elusive place called "home" and life at society’s margins. It is beautiful.

Poignant lyrics of the Pogues song~

"The Old Main Drag"

When I first came to London I was only sixteen
With a fiver in my pocket and my ole dancing bag
I went down to the dilly to check out the scene
But I soon ended up upon the old main drag

There the he-males and the she-males paraded in style
And the old man with the money would flash you a smile
In the dark of an alley you'd work for a fiver
For a swift one off the wrist down on the old main drag

In the cold winter nights the old town it was chill
But there were boys in the cafes who'd give you cheap pills
If you didn't have the money you'd cajole and you'd beg
There was always lots of tuinol on the old main drag

One evening as I was lying down by Leicester Square
I was picked up by the coppers and kicked in the balls
Between the metal doors at Vine Street I was beaten and mauled
And they ruined my good looks for the old main drag

In the tube station the old ones who were on the way out
Would dribble and vomit and grovel and shout
And the coppers would come along and push them about
And I wished I could escape from the old main drag

And now I'm lying here I've had too much booze
I've been shat on and spat on and raped and abused
I know that I am dying and I wish I could beg
For some money to take me from the old main drag

John Waters does a quirky spin on '50s nostalgia in Cry-Baby, his musical homage to Rebel Without a Cause and Romeo and Juliet. Set in Baltimore in 1954 at the birth of rock & roll, the film features Johnny Depp as Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker. Depp is pure charisma as a juvenile delinquent with a permanent tear slithering down his cheek, a reminder of his state-executed parents.

In the depths of his despair appears goody-goody girl Allison (Amy Locane), who has a sexual crush on Cry-Baby. But Allison's Pat Boone-like boyfriend, Baldwin (Stephen E. Miller), the leader of the squares, is dead set against Cry-Baby and the rest of the juvenile delinquents and leads a revolt against them. In the resultant riot, the juvenile delinquents are blamed for the chaos, and Cry-Baby finds himself dispatched to reform school. ~ Paul Brenner

'C.R.A.Z.Y' exudes the beauty,
the poetry and the madness
of the human spirit in all

its contradictions.

'C.R.A.Z.Y' is a story of two love affairs. A father's love for his five sons. And one son's love for his father, a love so strong it compels the son to live a lie.

That son is Zac Beaulieu, born on the 25th of December 1960, different from all his brothers, but desperate to fit in.

During the next 20 years, life takes Zac on a surprising and unexpected journey that ultimately leads him to accept his true nature and, even more importantly, leads his father to love him for who he really is. A mystical fable about a modern day nomad-like figure, "C.R.A.Z.Y" exudes the beauty, the poetry and the madness of the human spirit in all its contradictions.

'Extraordinary lives of ordinary people in search of love and happiness'

Zac Beaulieu (Marc-Andre Grondin), the fourth child of a middle-class Quebecois family comes into the world on December 25th, 1960. Have you ever wanted a pram for Christmas and been given table hockey instead? As a child, his Christmas/birthday presents are always large, but somehow disappointing, since they are never what he truly wants. His father Gervais (Michel Cote) disapproves of the aforementioned pram, which his mother reluctantly returns. Zac worships his father, an active family man with a passion for Patsy Cline and Charles Aznavour, but Gervais senses early that Zac is not like his brothers.

Bookish Christian spends much of the film quietly reading food labels. Raymond is the black sheep who turns early to motorcycles, drugs and casual sex. Antoine is the jock who never seems to outgrow his childlike flatulence. After Zac, there is Yvan, the baby, who is cosseted and overfed, with pettishly long hair. It is not until much later, in a mishap over a cherished Patsy Cline import, that Zac realises his father has (rather campishly) named his five sons to spell out the letters of his favourite Patsy Cline song. A testament to Gervais's sentimentality, as well as his connoisseurship of music, it also sums up the tone of this pleasantly surreal family drama/coming-of-age story.

Much of the film's action takes place in the Seventies and early Eighties, during Zac's teen years, as he struggles to come to terms with his sexuality. The early religiosity of Zac's childhood, exemplified in the figure of his devout and frequently pregnant mother, is soon replaced with teenage rebellion, memorably expressed in a scene where he tells us in voice over: "Midnight mass was so short and sweet ever since I became an atheist," as he levitates over the congregation to the tune of Sympathy For The Devil.

Although he professes to have abandoned his faith, Zac is the kind of teenager who is always getting caught in his transgressions and then submitting himself to trials of atonement. In order to overcome both his asthma and his sexual longings, he races a red light on his moped and ends up bedridden with whiplash for several weeks. Another time, he trudges all the way home in a blizzard after simply looking at another man in a record shop.

Throughout the film, Zac's quest to come to terms with his sexuality is expressed via a longtime crush on his cousin Brigitte and her Travoltaesque boyfriend, who early on bestows a "shotgun", the passing of marijuana smoke between pursed lips in an almost-kiss that provides Zac with his first real sensual experience with another man. When a psychiatrist finally suggests that he is being "subconsciously deliberate" in his actions, Zac still cannot accept that he might be gay and drives himself into the arms of his childhood friend Michelle (Natasha Thompson).

His bid for heterosexuality lasts until a watershed confrontation at his brother Christian's wedding in 1980 sends him running off to the Holy Land to escape. In Jerusalem, he has his second sexual encounter, this time with a guy who looks like a blond version of the hunky Jesus you sometimes see in "youth" versions of the Bible. Only after coming close to death in the desert, does Zac return to Quebec and his family.

Although C.R.A.Z.Y is in part a gay coming-of-age story, it's told without the explicit sex one might expect, making this film much more in line with the work of Gus Van Sant than Gregg Araki. The privacy that is accorded to Zac's experiences (his two sexual encounters with young men happen off camera) with a subtlety that seems in keeping with the character's reluctance to come to terms with being gay. The film is also a sometimes bizarre family drama infused with a mixture of the qualities that make French Canadian cinema great: devout spirituality, odd folklore and the kind of irreverent humor that fundamentalists think ought to go straight to hell.

It is filled with quietly hilarious, but also cringe-making moments, such as the time Zac earnestly sings along to Ziggy Stardust in full Ziggy make-up, until the moment Antoine storms in and tackles him. It is only then that Zac realizes half the neighborhood has been viewing his performance through an open bedroom window. It also doesn't hurt that the actor who plays Zac is considered Canada's Gael Garcia Bernal and spends a lot of time looking quite the mark in tight jeans and eyeliner.

We all know that rock music is more than the soundtrack of our teenage years; it’s the narration. And so it is here for Zac, with the Rolling Stones (“Sympathy for the Devil”), David Bowie (“Space Oddity”) and Pink Floyd (“Shine On You Crazy Diamond”) taking pride of place, setting up a dialogue with Zac’s father’s own life soundtrack (Patsy Cline and Charles Aznavour). C.R.A.Z.Y. has an amazing soundtrack throughout.

By turns moving and funny, but always ringing true, this is a quietly remarkable film.
