'We Were One Man' had its U.S. premiere at the Chicago International Film Festival in 1980, where it was awarded the prestigious Silver Hugo. Written, produced, edited, and directed by France's premiere gay director, Philippe Vallois, who went on to direct the great body-building murder mystery spoof, Rainbow Serpent.

Serge Avedikian who plays the French simple minded country asylum runaway Guy and Piotr Stanislas who plays the German soldier Rolf both deliver performances which are truly extraordinary.

It is the autumn of 1943 and the war is coming to an end. Guy lives alone in a cottage in Lot-et-Garonne, a simpleton who creates drawing in a primitive style, ekes out a living in the woods, is vague about his history (claiming he was raised by a cow), and has a unique relationship with Jenine, a girl in the village.

Guy finds the wounded and unconscious German soldier Rolf in the woods and carries him home. Rolf recovers enough to try to move on but Guy will not let him leave, trailing him, grabbing him, challenging him to feats of strength. Rolf stays, and an intense relationship develops between them with Rolf questioning his commitment to the Nazi cause and Guy suffering from hallucinations and blocked out memories of his incarceration in a mental hospital. This relationship serves as a catalyst for both men to embark on a difficult exploration of long repressed feelings.

The film maintains an extraordinary quality and momentum right up to the last 5 minutes or so, where the film's unique and original tension is finally dispelled when Guy and Ralf's intense relationship becomes sexual in a lyrical, highly erotic love scene and then jealousy and possessiveness bring on tragedy and pathos.

The film's exceptional view-point re-visits the old theme of a Nazi occupied France with fresh vigor. The whole diabolical sham which is war is profoundly hung around the subtly moving and developing intimacy of these two unlikely comrades.

A world which has vanished, that of early 20th century rural France provides a surprising setting for a gay love that is as raw, salty and earthy as the peasant culture who populated the invaded country.

When Nico's parents go on a summer trip, he stays at their beach front house alone with his childhood friend Dani, a lanky, cocky fellow. The two enjoy their liberty, meet some girls, go swimming, and talk about sex during their nightly krampac (joint masturbation) sessions. Krampac is a word coined by the playwright Jordi Sanchez in his original play of the same name and hence the title of the movie. Their friendship starts showing some wear and tear when it becomes clear that the object of Dani's burgeoning sexual longings are the girls, while Nico is mostly interested in Dani.

Against ocean sunsets and the Spanish landscape, we watch these adolescents come to grips with what they want, and what they can get. They buy condoms, they smoke some dope, they go to beach parties, they even try to drug an unsuspecting girl with sleeping pills. All of this is served up with the right mixture of knowing and nostalgia. It just might remind you of long-forgotten make-out sessions on some parents' couch in a not uncomfortable way. Based on a play by Jordi Sanchez, director Cesc Gay manages exactly the right tone.

The movie's success is especially amazing in the light of how much could have gone wrong. Coming-of-age-in-the-summer movies tend to produce a prefabricated aftertaste. The gay subject matter as well as the straight sex could have been exploited, over dramatized, or screwed up in a million other ways. Ink has been spilled over the film being "uncompromising" and "disturbing," but there is a difference between frankness and exploitation. The honesty here is reassuring and touching rather than off-putting. "Krámpack" gets the balance exactly right. The film is light, but not slight, a little miracle of handling a delicate topic with great deftness and care.

Fernando Ramallo, who plays Nico, is a hot commodity in Spain, and it's easy to see why: he oozes a peculiar kind of confidence and independence that makes it hard to take your eyes off him. Jordi Vilches' Dani, a hyper kinetic joker who's just figuring out what to do with all that testosterone, is the perfect foil for him. In fact, all the characters are a delight, and maybe that's part of the movie's secret: there are no villains in it, nobody is to blame for the things that go wrong, and everybody deserves our attention. It's rare that something so generous and smart flickers over the screens.

Profound performances are given here by the major players as well as the very competent supporting cast in this finely tuned and deftly executed little film, unassuming and unpretentious, about hustlers in Hollywood and the impossibility of escaping themselves.

Richard Chamberlain (Thaddeus), Michael Imperioli (Allen) and James Duval (Jaime) in particular give heartfelt performances that confirm the reasons for the great success of these actors. Duval is well know for his roles in the Gregg Araki trilogy, 'Totally Fucked Up', 'The Doom Generation' and 'Nowhere.'

Rich lawyer Thaddeus (a pre-coming out Richard Chamberlain), dying of AIDS, pays a visit to Allen (a pre-Sopranos Michael Imperioli), who once made a living on the streets and is trying to go straight as an artist. Allen is now involved with a wealthy gallery owner, Eva (Ute Lemper); Thaddeus, a former client of Allen's, implores Allen to find someone else from his past, Jamie (James Duval), who's still hustling.

Allen has no idea that the return of Thaddeus, and his favor to find the young Jaime (James Duval), will force him to not only deal with his past life, but with his current feelings for Thaddeus, who hopes to leave the two great loves of his life to take care of each other after he is gone.

Neither are ready for the responsibility and the film leaves you wondering what will become of them together and individually. The director creates a fractured and unsensationalized exploration of society's castoffs and those who cast themselves out: Imperioli proves he's got more in him than just goombahs, and Chamberlain is just downright heartbreaking.
Independent films of this nature and quality are not to be forgotten.

'Drift' is a deft exploration of what might happen if someone's life took different paths. Ryan (R.T. Lee) is an aspiring screenwriter who loves the horror genre.

He's been living with his lover Joel (Greyson Dayne) for almost three years.

At a party the two meet the young virginal Leo (Jonathon Roessler) who is also a horror screenwriter. With this connection the two become instant friends.

On the couples' third-year anniversary, Ryan leaves Joel and thinks he may have found his soul mate in Leo, a lover who will understand him fully.

With the break up of Ryan and Joel each of the next three twenty-minute segments starts over with that same scene and progresses quite differently (very reminiscent of the movie "Go" or "Sliding Doors").

Each subsequent sequence has different relationship results utilizing the same characters.

'Drift' follows what happens if:
(1.)Ryan & Leo fell madly in love,
(2.) if they just had a fling, and
(3.) if Leo didn't share Ryan's feelings at all.

What makes the movie work is how well realized the characters are; as the different scenarios mark out each turn of fate, their behavior changes but is completely compelling as the actions of the same person.

The movie is tightly edited, so that just when it threatens to wallow in relationship drama, it moves forward. Plus, the steamy sex scenes have more heft because of the reality of the emotions portrayed.

There’s a lot going on in '2by4'. Writer,director,star Jimmy Smallhorne blends a sexual identity crisis with a scathing look at the experience of illegal Irish immigrants in New York City to deliver a compelling story through dark streets, dark bedrooms, and dark bars.

Johnny is well-respected in his job with his uncle Trump's construction company, as well as in the Irish community in the north of the Bronx, where, helped along partly by drugs and alcohol, he parties until the small hours. He loves his girlfriend, but somehow, Johnny, facing increasing sleeping disorders, starts to feel uneasy. The new leather trousers seem to be having an effect on night owls on the dark streets, or is Johnny looking for the company of other men? One night he witnesses his uncle with a trick on the building site, which seems only to reawaken old demons. What Johnny doesn't know is, why.

As tension rises at the construction site — Uncle Trump has been squandering his cash rather than paying his crew — Johnnie seeks relief from the stress by taking a walk through some very mean streets, where he encounters an Australian hustler named Christian (Bradley Fitts). Christian is a rent boy who hasn’t even made it to Manhattan yet. He takes Johnny to a nearby crack house for a night of sex but a tender connection develops between the two men. Johnnie wakes up out of a nightmare and Christian softly comforts him back to reality. Johnnie has the opportunity to reciprocate that tenderness when Christian shows up at Johnny’s house one night a total mess. Johnnie puts him in a cold tub and gently nurses him back to reality. Maria walks in just in time to catch them in a kiss.

Attempts to build a relationship with Christian seem doomed to failure for reasons unknown, and his girlfriend Maria puzzles over the impenetrable wall of silence surrounding her lover, sinking deeper and deeper into desperation...

Any hope that '2by4' will be a moving story of a gay man coming to terms with himself goes out the window when Johnnie, in a fit of self-loathing, picks a fight in a local bodega so he can become the victim of a good old-fashioned Bronx smack down, iron pipe included. He follows that up with a trip to a particularly freaky bar (identified in the credits as New York’s legendary and now shuttered Vault) where amidst the backdrop of clientele that look like creatures from the deepest circle of Johnnie's hell he has a climactic breakdown.

For a small film, '2by4' benefits by having a big-time cinematographer, Declan Quinn (who’s worked on everything from Leaving Las Vegas to Monsoon Wedding), to capture the grit of the tough lives of these immigrants. Some of the scenes showing the construction crew riding around in the back of a truck and gawking at the size of Manhattan’s skyscrapers are reminiscent of similar scenes that Quinn shot for In America. In both cases, they succeed at conveying the dislocation and amazement that an immigrant in New York must feel.

Jimmy Smallhorne, director, lead actor and co-author of this masterpiece of North American independent film, redefines the concept of "raw" with '2by4'. Everything else we have seen so far pales into insignificance in comparison. It is not just the incredible authenticity attained by, for example, the way the film makers have put together a mixture of professional actors and those with no acting experience whatsoever, and even to the extent of using the real New York Irish dialect instead of the usual "more-or-less" accent. It is more to do with the way in which Smallhorne takes the courage to show things as they are to an unsuspecting public, which cinema on both sides of the Atlantic has so far never dared. This is not just about addressing social taboos, gay identity or sexual child abuse, but the horrifyingly accurate portrayal of the affects of incest on an unsuspecting young man, the absence followed by the outburst of emotion, and the sweeping aside of literally every doubt as to the honesty of the portrayal of the main character.

Whether it's on the subject of the problems of establishing relationships or communication, nights interrupted by terror or the traumatic break-down caused by drugs which also enter the gateway to the sub-conscience, the acting and directorial virtuosity of Smallhorne are unparallelled. If the Oscars were more than a token of Hollywood satisfaction, Smallhorne would without doubt have received Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Actor.

'2by4' is by far one of the best gay films of the 90's despite the fact that it was not aimed specifically at a gay audience even though it contains an intense, ambivalent gay sex scene - certainly more grandiose than any before that time. For the male-centered abuse film - if such a genre really does exist at all - '2by4' is probably an even more important milestone.

'Angels in America', Tony Kushner's play, produced in the early to mid 90's, is both a damning indictment on the lack of response to the early AIDS crisis, to a celebration of those who survive and continue to live with the disease.

It's a brilliant work that is not easily understood, but upon several viewings, and even readings of the play, allows the layers and filters of this incredible drama to infuse itself into your own psyche, and by merely watching it, you are changed. Angels quite possibly is the quintessential drama ever produced.

The script is poetic, much like Shakespeare in beauty, fluidity, and emotional penetration. Therefore the viewer should not expect realistic naturalistic dialogue.

The stage is often more suited for the poetic than is the screen, but Mike Nichols stayed true to the message and kept the beautiful dialogue as originally written and the jaw-dropping film adaptation of Tony Kushner's epic, 5-hour play, is a defining artistic statement documenting the political and social upheaval that AIDS-HIV disease brought to America's gay community and to the wider America around it.

Mixing agitprop and camp with magical realism and utter, heart-rending, pathos, tragedy, and ultimately, the triumph of the human spirit over desperation and resignation.

Kushner and director Mike Nichols bring the story to the screen in a big, big way, with all-around amazing performances by a perfectly cast ensemble.
The musical score matches the high levels of word and vision.

Al Pacino gets to chew up yards of scenery in his portrayal of the sleazy, venal, far-right wing attorney Roy Cohn (who acted as Joe McCarthy's point man in the infamous 1950s prosecution of "atom spies" Julius and Ethel Rosenberg) and for once, all of Pacino's high-decibel yelling pays off with some real dramatic ooompf.

There are a lot of things that you could comment on in this play -- the exploration of Jewish-American assimilation, the powerful reaffirmation of a supposedly marginalized leftist perspective, etc. -- but the most profound insight Kushner has to offer is about who the real redeeming angels will have to be in our nation's coming cultural reconciliation.

The humanity that he is able to impart into the character of the middle-American Mormon, Mother Pitt (played faultlessly by Meryl Streep), is a marvel of modern political drama: and it rings undeniably true.

Pushing past our narrowly defined social and political "roles," and into our shared humanity, is the only road open to folks who want to see America's moral and ethical core liberated from the ideological intrusions of the religious far-right, and the resulting frustrated anger of the disenfranchised middle-liberal-left.

As many people have learned, particularly amid the devastating upheavals of the HIV crisis, our real emotional lives are (ideally) not ruled by dogma.

Mother Pitt isn't just a caring parent, she's also a kind, pragmatic person, and for her, the most pragmatic choice when confronted with an epidemic, is to simply offer sympathy and solace. What could be more natural? Let's hope her example prevails.
