"You never know where loves going to grow...it's a "Trick of Fate."

The term "coming-of-age" in reference to films about kids in their mid to late teens has become a cliché, but one cannot deny these films' have the instant ability for most to relate to because all of us at one point have experienced the painful transition from adolescence to adulthood, with the realization that finally getting to be grown up isn't the experience we dreamed it would be.

'Summer Storm' is a painfully realistic, yet positive story of a small town athlete’s first awkward sexual awakening. It follows the angst of Tobi, who realizes that his feelings toward his closest friend, Achim, have gone past friendship and into a mixture of sexual desire and love. Achim is marginally aware of Tobi's feelings, although he does not quite understand what is going on. Achim is experiencing his own first love – with a girl – and the resulting strain on his and Tobi's friendship takes a toll as they head off to a summer camp to focus on rigorous athletic training for an upcoming rowing event.

It is at the camp that the team encounters another team called the Queerstrokes which is made up of gay men, all of them comfortable with their sexuality and very open about it. This team is ridiculed by some of Tobi’s teammates, but Tobi himself seems both fascinated and repulsed by the Queerstrokes. In creating friendships with some of the men, Tobi finds a means of acceptance, both external and internal, of his perplexing dilemma. This new found comfort does nothing, however, to alleviate the tensions between him and Achim.

He has already felt an intense desire to be more intimate with Achim, and an equally intense jealousy of Achim’s new girlfriend Sandra. Tobi tries to pair up with Sandra’s beautiful teammate Anke, but the sparks don’t fly as they should and he is left to stew in his own jealousy and frustrated sexual desire compounded by the homophobic comments of a wealthy teammate.

The acting in Summer Storm is so good that viewers might forget that they are watching a work of fiction. Each character is so perfectly cast, so well-rounded, that they could easily be real people. The acting never feels forced, as it is so natural and fresh and honest.

Written and directed by Marco Kreuzpainter, 'Summer Storm' perfectly captures the pain experienced when the object of your first sexual crush thinks of you as “just a friend.” When Tobi’s awkward advances toward Achim are made public knowledge he finds refuge with one sensitive member of the rival team. This young man tells him that being gay will never be easy, but hiding who you are is even worse. No matter what ones sexual orientation, we can all relate to the sheer pain and indignity of unrequited love as well as the confusion and excitement that often accompany young adulthood.

All Tobi’s dreams for his summer vacation might not have worked out as perfectly as they would have in a John Hughes’ flick, but while watching you get the distinct impression that he’s going to be just fine anyway. 'Summer Storm' may seem to be simplistically hopeful, but its sweet and truthful portrayal of the pain associated with discovering your identity will be appreciated by anyone who has gone through a like experience.

Filmed on location in Germany, the cinematography, especially since the majority of the film takes place outside, is downright gorgeous. The picture is crisp and clear, and the colors are beautiful. The stunning visuals do much to contribute to the overall emotional impact of the film.

"A Tale of Deceit, Power, and Victimization: Fassbinder at his Best!"

A powerful and harrowing melodrama and one of Fassbinder's most accessible movies, this is a must-see for all those interested in intelligent film making.

The tragic story of Fox is masterfully and poignantly handled by Fassbinder, while never slipping into sloppy sentimentality. At the same time the film explores sexual and political issues that are still very much relevant.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder has long been honored as the 'bad boy' in European cinema, a writer, director and actor who repeatedly has taken chances and because of his brutal honesty has succeeded in making a stream of important films.

'Fox and His Friends' dates back to 1975 and remains one of Fassbinder's most successful films. As with all of his films, Fassbinder deals with the homosexual subculture in Germany but his main message goes far beyond the characters he creates: the examination of how people manipulate people for personal gain and the destruction that produces is a recurring problem and one that this film certainly explores.

'Fox' - a nickname of Franz Bieberkopf - (acted with consummate skill by Fassbinder himself) is a lower class gay carny kid whose lover is arrested, leaving the carnival to collapse and leaving Fox without support. Enter handsome Max (Karlheinz Böhm), a wealthy antiques dealer, who picks up Fox, helps him buy the requisite 'lottery ticket' on which Fox bases his hopes for financial survival via manipulative means, and takes him home, introducing Fox to his gay friends who regard Fox as scum but show obvious physical attraction to his rawness.

Surprisingly Fox wins the lottery and suddenly has 500,000 DMs and with his new money, Max's friends abruptly see a target for obtaining that money. One of the friends named Eugen (Peter Chatel) takes Fox in as a lover and talks him into investing in Eugen's family business of bookbinding. Eugen's father Wolf (Adrian Hoven) and mother (Ulla Jacobsson) tolerate their son's life with a low class wretch, ridiculing his manners and lack of culture and education, but willingly take his money to salvage their business.

With a lover and a business and a role model to make him suave, Fox dons fancy clothes, banters with his old friends in a tawdry club, and makes the pretenses that at last he is secure and happy. But in time Fox is blamed for problems at the business and when his funds have been depleted on expensive vacations and apartments by the smarmy self centered Eugen, Fox realizes that now without money he has no 'fancy friends', no lover, no security and his life becomes unbearable: the ending to the film is a tragedy beyond description.

Some would say the film is mannered in ways that depict stereotypes of the gay world (effeminate men, transvestite
s, hustlers, etc), but Fassbinder is completely honest in his attempt to recreate a subculture of a specific time in Germany.

The characters are well written and well acted allowing us to look at Fassbinder's greater picture of depravity between social class antipathies.

In many ways this is a difficult film to watch, but Fassbinder wisely places the main character whom he enacts in a place where his foibles and lack of higher class knowledge can be at once very humorous as well as pitiable. 'Fox and His Friends' has become a classic in gay cinema repertoire. ~ Grady Harp

"Decadent" and
"Dysfunctional".
Words that are
redefined by the
Nicholson family . .

Rarely screened, forgotten by even the most devoted admirers of Fassbinder, 'Whity' is nonetheless a crucial film in Fassbinder's own development as a film-artist. The style of the film marks Fassbinder's turn away from his earlier, Neo-realistic efforts (notably 'Katzelmacher' and 'Why Does Herr R. Run Amok?' and turn towards the flamboyant, melodramatic form favored by him until his untimely death in 1982.

Melodrama turns out to be the best possible style for the film's story, which chronicles the fall of the seigniorial Nicholson family in the Mexican 19th century. Indeed, this film should be seen for no other reason than the inescapable weirdness one feels in watching German actors play Mexicans in the Old West. It's like seeing Peter Lorre playing John Wayne! "Decadent" and "dysfunctional" are words redefined by the Nicholson family: the patriarch, Ben Nicholson, is remote and cruel, the wife a nymphomaniac, the older son a flaming homosexual, and his brother a severely retarded adolescent.

Then there's Whity, the ironically named mulatto slave of the Nicholson family, an inadvertent focus point of each family member's perverse obsessions. It is this mutual obsession with Whity (an obsession shared by the viewer by film's end) which allows Fassbinder to explore the themes which were to comprise his greatest contribution to film's development as a medium, including: dominance and submission, the role of the Other, sexuality, the doppelganger, the economy of familial relationships, and the obstacles fate puts in the way of consummating love.

These issues gain complexity when one considers that the slave Whity is played by Fassbinder's then-lover, Gunther Kaufmann. Given this, what is the viewer to make of such stylistic scenes as when Whity is disciplined by his master, while the other family members garrulously look on--knowing that Fassbinder himself is also watching from his director/dictator's chair? (The complex inter-relationships of Fassbinder and the actors during the filming of 'Whity' were later chronicled by Fassbinder in his film 'Beware of a Holy Whore', which is based on the real-life melodrama that occurred off the set of 'Whity'.) If nothing else, 'Whity' deserves to be included in with the other Fassbinder films, such as 'Despair', which are so justly celebrated for their psychological depth and complexity.

Beyond this, two aspects of Fassbinder's technique in making 'Whity' deserve special mention. The first is that in 'Whity', one of the first of his films to employ a half-way reputable color process, Fassbinder shows himself to be a great colorist in the tradition of Delacroix, bathing the eyes with the lushest oranges, browns, and reds to be seen this side of a sunset. The palette is one that seems to have existed in film only in the late 60s and early 70s, finding similarly gorgeous expression in Truffaut's 'Fahrenheit 451', Boorman's 'Point Blank', Godard's 'La Chinoise', and Nicolas Roeg's early efforts ('A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to The Forum', 'Performance', 'Walkabout', 'Don't Look Now', 'The Man Who Fell to Earth').

The second aspect of noteworthy technique is a camera movement that truly has no precedent in film history--a fact which makes the obscurity of 'Whity' among film scholars all the more remarkable. The best example of the technique occurs in a scene in which Ben Nicholson reads his last will and testament to the silent family members surrounding him. During an unbroken ten-minute take, the actors remain virtually motionless, as if posed in some Rembrantian tableaux (and in this way recalling Dreyer's 'Day of Wrath). Against this stasis, the camera pans slowly from one family member to another, following their own sight-lines, as if the camera were recording the trace of their attention. For ten minutes the camera repeats this zig-zag path with methodical precision, while psychedelic, trance-inducing music drones in the background. The greatest merit of the technique (seen also in an equally static scene between Whity and the retarded son in the horse barn) is that it allows the viewer time enough to meditate on the relationships among the characters involved in the tableaux--in this case most profoundly on the relationships of power among family members. It's as if Fassbinder, using film technique, took a snapshot of the family, and then spent ten minutes tracing out with his finger exactly who is dominated by whom, who resents the domination, who is perceiving whom and how, and so on. The technique, which to my knowledge Fassbinder never used again to such great effect, can only be seen as the great innovation that it is, and as such, a powerful tool for the revelation of psychological truth. However, let none of these deeper concerns eclipse the enjoyment to be had watching this bizarre, teutonic Dallas unfold. Like the best moments in a Warhol film, the high camp of 'Whity' is very, very funny to watch--certainly because it is absurd, which is not to say it is without profound meaning. ~ Mark Frey

" One of the all time
great gay
themed films!"

Taxi Zum Klo (Taxi to the Toilet) is a remarkable AIDS-eve film that was scandalous in its day and still runs rings around self-proclaimed "edgy" queer films that bore us to death each year at annual local gay and lesbian film festivals. Smart and efficiently put-together, its lofty status in the history of gay-themed cinema is well-deserved (Wayne Koestenbaum called it one of the greatest gay-themed films ever, said it still blows his mind with its "happy explicitness, its cheerful liberatory politics"), and post-AIDS viewers may view it thorough an especially tortuous "what might have been" filter.

Frank (Frank Ripploh) is a high-school teacher in Berlin. His diligent nine-to-five is rewarded with trips to action johns and porn cinemas, where one night he meets Bernd (Bernd Broaderup), a theater manager. They share a romantic affair, but Frank's self-described restlessness and need to cruise gets in the way. Though he seems to enjoy Bernd's plans for a provincial retirement, he also wonders if he'll ever lose the need to hunt the streets after dark, and have enough money after retirement to hire young boy prostitutes.

Ripploh, who had a small role in Querelle and who often went under the professional name of Peggy von Schnottgenberg, acts as he directs: subtly and gradually. There's no melodrama or quick changes of pace here, the whole thing chugs along at a perfectly pitched pace. A notoriously explicit sex scene (you see everything, no less than porn) occurs mid-film and upsets Frank and Bernd's domestic bliss, but this is about the only plot point in the film that seems to upset the film's gloriously steady rhythm.

Ripploh's hairy bum crack plays a major role in proceedings, it's the first object we see in the movie, and he spends most of his home time in a t-shirt only, bending over and doing calisthenics with no undies. A particularly fascinating scene has Frank at the doctor for an anal wart examination, and nothing is left to the imagination with close ups of a speculum being inserted and Frank in stirrups on the surgery gurney. Grabs of ancient black-and-white German gay porn is interspersed throughout.

Frank trades the inertia of his day job for the inertia of endless nocturnal sex cruising driving around Berlin looking for cock - but what was interesting is the polymorphous approach to romance and erotic partnerships. Frank and Bernd don't seem to stake any claim of exclusivity on each other, though, as mentioned, it's Bernd who appears to be the romantic dreamer who wants something a little more than inner-urban casual-sex purgatory.

Nesty Bernd yearns for Frank to quit the acid tabs and clubs, which Frank seems to consider after an eerily portent stay in the hospital with STD overload. While Bernd tires to invigorate the affair with a trip to tropical Capri, Frank can do nothing but search out more toilet sex in the chilly Berlin snow. Frank pisses in tricks' mouths, and so on and Brend tends to drift out of the picture in the third act. Broaderup is easy-on-the-eye and especially effective as the gentle lover who tries in vain to steer his partner away from the fast lane, and writer-director-star Ripploh unveils an unprecedentedly explicit form of private video diary to the world.

The film ends with a genial party scene and everyone seems fairly happy with the free sex atmosphere and nascent and colorful gay scene, but for me, the film worked as a heartbreaking tragedy, as even though all the characters seem to be fairly content and absorbed with free love and adventure, they have no idea of what was about to break everything to pieces over the next twenty-four months. ~ Mark Adnum
