.With a hint of 'Film Noir' a surprising exploration of the evolution of the homosexuality of two adolescent boys . ..

In 1980 Jacques Duron produced this short (44 minutes) black and white film and presented French cinema a recording of the dynamics of two young boys coming of age as homosexuals.

Duron captured the metamorphosis of Philippe and Claude into sexual 'adulthood' from the cocoon of their boyhood friendship.

Philippe's recognition of his homosexuality and the blossoming of his passionate love for his boyhood friend Claude becomes an emotional obsession immersed in unrequited love and the futile longing for the tenderness that is not to be.

After toying with each others desires in an afternoon cafe there is a brief moment and a clue to be seen of Claude's journey as the two young boys are about to leave that cafe. Prior to leaving the cafe watch for Claude's reaction to the man on the street. That is a clue to Claude's divergent emotional and sexual journey which becomes distinctly evident in the climactic scene of the film.

'Through the eyes of Isabelle Huppert, Dominique's gaze of amused but benevolent appraisal is also the director Benoît Jacquot's in this adaptation of a Mishima novel concerning the relationship between a well-to-do woman in her 40s and a callow young hustler of both sexes.

What interests director Jacquot is the complex of power play and genuine affection between the two characters, which he documents in a cool, thoroughly adult manner. Actress Isabelle Huppert is formidable.

Intense physical attraction makes lovers of Dominique (Isabelle Huppert) a poised, sophisticated career woman and Quentin (Vincent Martinez), a handsome, streetwise young hustler. She gives him a nice place to live and a regular allowance, while he brings youth, beauty and excitement into her austere existence. For a time, the power of desire is enough to overcome their differences of age, class and experience, until their affair insidiously drives them both to the edge.

Benoit Jacquot's The School of Flesh is a study in the mysterious and consuming nature of sexual attraction, and the strange ways people behave when under its spell. Adapted from a novel by Yukio Mishima and transposed to present-day Paris, The School of Flesh offers a fresh interpretation of the archetypal May/December love story, one that considers its characters in all their human complexity and contradiction. Dominique, a mature, self-possessed career woman and her young lover, Quentin, a sometime hustler prematurely hardened from years of trading on his beauty and sexuality. Although he is approaching forty, Alain, a lawyer, lives a life of muddled confusion.The "confusion" here is more a plethora, an embarrassment of riches and of choices.

At the center of every scene is bisexual (or is he just gay?) lawyer Alain (Pascal Greggory). Everybody wants him, or thinks he wants them -- handsome imprisoned murderer Marc (Vincent Martinez), cute gay boy Christophe (Cyrille Thouvenin), attractive and accomplished law partner Laurence (Nathalie Richard, who's more Alain's age); the prisoner's (former) girlfriend Babette (Julie Gayet); Marc's prison-mate Étienne (noted singer Alain Bashung) even gets amusingly involved at the end.

Alain and his law partner are talking about marrying, and it's all practical and boring, except that it's impulsive too. Through it all Pascal Greggory has that bored, annoyed look he always has; but he registers a lot of other looks too -- he's a skillful movie actor and for good reason one of the busiest in France. This is very French, a sort of comedy of ill humor, sex, and indecision. The hilariously grumpy and irritable "haute bourgeoisie" relatives of Laurence and Alain who come into play when wedding bells are in the offing include the great Bulle Ogier as Laurence's mother. The wealth of nude scenes aren't just titillation; they're all skillfully and sometimes hilariously illustrative of characters and situations and of Alain's "embarras du choix."

' Confusion of Genders' (La Confusion des Genres) is an engaging film which offers a perceptive and honest reflection on life, love and sexuality in the liberated society in which we now live. This intelligent and well-structured film features a talented cast of actors, including Pascal Greggory whose intense portrayal of the brooding Alain is particularly notable.

In a creative way the film contrasts the attitudes of three different generations our society has evolved over the past few decades. Middle-aged Alain is paralyzed with indecision as to how he should live his life in the face of such choice. By contrast, the lives of the previous generation and the next generation appear far more straightforward. Alain’s parents were driven into marriage at an early age, by the conventions of the day, while today’s young are unreflective, and go directly to where their passion calls them therefore having no such choice to make.

Some may ask why so many characters are attracted to the narcissistic, emotionally remote Alain, but it is often just this type of person who has many people attracted to him. For some, he is a challenge. For others, he is safely unattainable. For yet others, he is someone who will hurt them (which they expect), or who won't be hurt too much if they leave him. Alain mirrors the other characters' loneliness back to them, and one wonders if any of them would be happy if they ended up being Alain's choice – and if he could ever stick with that choice.

If you're happily content in a stable, long-lasting relationship, then you will see this film as a comedy about things that happen to other people. But if your heart still has the capacity to lead you in directions you don't expect, this film will have greater meaning for you.

With ''Trembling Before G-d,'' the director Sandi Simcha DuBowski latches on to a provocative subject and invests it with a compelling tenderness. This documentary is essentially about merging the Old World and the New, but with a twist that is shocking: it concerns the heartfelt desire of homosexuals to find a place for themselves in Orthodox Judaism, where they are shunned and repudiated. When does compassion supplant dogma, or can it? These are the deceptively innocent questions raised by ''Trembling'.

The director knows it would be wrong to take the easy way out and castigate the rabbi who tries to understand the sexual choice of David, a Jew who wants to be a part of the flock and cannot see a way out of his lifestyle. The rabbi does feel that things have changed since the Talmud -- which says homosexuality is punishable by death, ''an abomination,'' according to the Torah quote from Leviticus that opens the film -- but that has nothing to do with the demands of pure Orthodoxy. For the rabbi, David's path is simple, though for David, agonizingly so: stop his homosexual behavior or be condemned.

In the eyes of some Orthodox believers, death from AIDS becomes a hand striking down the blasphemers who dare to lead lives of open defiance, and ''Trembling'' doesn't overemphasize the opinion of many Orthodox Jews who think the problems that gays face are justified.

''Trembling Before G-d,'' a stark and appropriate title, tells several stories, profiling a number of people. Mr. DuBowski knows that the film would shatter if his viewpoint were rendered in hysterical terms or even condescending ones. The film is more interested in dealing with the intrinsic drama in these situations, like that of the gay Jews who decide to divorce themselves from their faith with the same forcefulness used against them.

The position taken by some of the gays and lesbians interviewed for the film is that this resistance gives purpose to their lives and provides a kind of reverse passion. What the picture needs is a little of what keeps them going -- the release offered by walking away from the strictures of the faith and from the harsh rejection they suffer from their families.

But that's not to say that ''Trembling'' is one-sided or simple-minded. Mr. DuBowski's camera subjects constitute a worldwide sampling taking up both sides of the argument; this kind of raw debate isn't limited to the United States or Israel.

The film's true sadness comes when a therapist, Shlomo Ashkinazy, explains the separatism that has kept such an anti-homosexual stance alive in Orthodox Judaism, even more than the dictum that men and women are to couple primarily to procreate. And after hearing the views of many fundamentalist Christians, it's obvious that strong views against homosexuals are not limited to Orthodox Judaism.

The fine and powerful ''Trembling Before G-d'' has gained a whole new urgency and purpose since its screening at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 2001. The subtlety of the pressure on David -- the advice given, implying that the necessity to change is easy -- is what adds a much deeper undercurrent of tragedy to this unforgettable picture. ~ Elvis Mitchell
